Do or 'how do' you show that you are a liberal?
I read lots of threads on DU that seem to suggest that being a liberal is about political action....
I don't see a lot of threads about being a liberal that suggest that being a liberal is about how people live their lives.

Of course, this is a political discussion board so maybe that why it seems that liberal is about what you think or say and not about what you do.

Are DU'ers mostly people that live with liberal political views or that live with liberal life choices?

5. I thought it was a "freak flag" that you were supposed to let fly.
Unless someone's giving out free flags. I got a free flag when I went to go see Bill Clinton speak. :)

But no, really, is someone giving out free flags?

4. I don't think I meant how others perceive you....
I meant how do you practice liberalism.

When you say you 'have a heart' .... do you mean that you feel therefore you are liberal?

9. I wasn't talking about a corporation, I was talking about a
corporate SOB. I guess I could have said just an SOB on the job instead of a corporate SOB on the job since the corporate adjective made you think I was talking about something I didn't intend to focus on.....

16. I'm sorry if my post seems 'off'....
I'm confused and disturbed by a tone in the political threads that you're not a liberal if you don't support Kucinich because no other candidate is liberal.

I wanted to get away from the political discussion part of DU because its been rancorous lately.

I was trying to understand if liberal in DU-speak is purely a political concept and not life choices (for example, living green).

26. as I said somewhere else in this thread
in the political threads.... there's a 'global test' on whether a person is liberal enough to be a DU'er.
And a lot of the ugly tone is between people who are probably more moderate politically BUT CONSIDER THEMSELVES TO BE LIBERAL and the people who are more politically liberal AND CONSIDER THEMSELVES TO BE TRUE LIBERALS.

I guess I never thought of liberal as being limited to political action... I thought of it as including life choice - being protective of the environment by living green for example or supporting civil rights by supporting the ACLU in its good works.

It seems like people on DU are willing to diss each other purely over difference in political views without any recognition that values or life actions may be equally important to being liberal

29. I think that 'liberal' includes accepting differences
whether its in gender, color, sexual orientation, reading interest, sports interest, or even political view

So I see the self-proclaimed uber-liberals acting a lot like freepers only from the opposite wing.

The fact that people even need wars, no matter what they're for, is a shame I think.

Also I put the actual Earth above Humanity's worth, that makes me a wacko crazy freak I've learned.

34. What do I do?
Well, I've given the past two years of my life to national service.

I was an AmeriCorps worker. I've spent the past 2 years, 50 hours a week, working in a local public school tutoring and building community support for literacy. It's extraordinarily fulfilling work, but there's really no way to live on the stipend. $950 a month (before taxes) is just not enough to live on, especially in the areas where the need is the greatest.

I'm also vegan. That might not mean much to some, but to me, it means that I don't contribute to the insane factory-farmed food culture that has taken over his country. My husband gave up driving to work 4 months ago and bikes 25 miles round-trip daily. I ride the bus to work.

So, what do you want to know? We live with "liberal" life choices. I might not be able to show up at marches, but I make the best choices that I can.

Next year, I'm going to drive across Texas (Texarkana to El Paso) in it with a bumpersticker that reads, "I'm gay, I'm for Obama, and I'm here to take your guns!". Seriously, I'm not gay, but I do drive a French-made car.

40. I really don't feel the need to 'show' anything of myself... I just am.
I show at least basic courtesy to the world around me. I support small businesses when I can. I don't drop bombs on other countries. If I see someone in need, I will try to help if I can. I only drive when I need to, and even then I use vehicles that are as fuel-efficient as I can afford. My last car was an older model Honda Accord, I don't currently own a car but out of the two that I have access to, one is a hybred and the other is a newer model Accord. (although it's a manual transmission, not an automatic. So I'm having to learn how to drive that one.)

I may not be able to multiply loaves and fishes and feed the homeless with them, nor do I have the money to give to charity, but when I worked at a pizza place and I saw a homeless guy digging through the trash at the end of the night, I gave him the extra pizza we had left over.
