Really fucking tired of buying stuff I have to assemble!
 on

Why does everything useful that is also reasonably priced come in the dreaded "assembly required" section of the store?

I'm so tired of finding just what I need to solve a problem around the house. Get it to the house; and then have to turn around and put it together!!

:grr: :banghead: :grr: :banghead: :grr:

:argh: :argh:

I'm tired of it. I don't like DIY. I don't care about power tools. I don't want to insert Tab A into Slot B.

I don't want to go through the parts list and make sure I have all required parts. It doesn't solve my problem; it just creates extra work for myself.

I just want to get the damn wheeled laundry basket home and have it work the way it's supposed to.

/  off

1. I'm not a bit DIY person either
especially when you are excited about whatever you bought and then open it and find it has lots of little pieces that are going to have to be separated, organized, and then identified before you can begin to put it together.

:grr:

:hi:

4. Yes, I have flashbacks
of a model Cutty Sark my brother tried to put together one year .... and I inherited it a couple of years later.

OMG! Talk about infinite parts! :P Neither one of us finished it. :D

All my DIY projects get judged by that model ship in terms of how big of a pain is it? :D

The laundry cart is about a 1/2 Cutty Sark. At least all the parts are visible.

7. I had that damned model, too!
You're not kidding about the parts. All those pulleys, eyelets, hatches, railings. Just an infinite number of tiny pieces of plastic. The worst part was rigging all the masts with sewing thread. It was like playing cat's cradle with ten other people, half of whom were suffering from DTs.

" It was like playing cat's cradle with ten other people, half of whom were suffering from DTs."

My dad was a lab assistant to a couple of surgeons at the VA during that time. So he brought home suture spools. That's what we used. Still, it was a pain to get that right. The instructions in the box weren't that forthcoming. We had to look up rigging to make sure ours was somewhat authentic.

5. See that's the way to do it
have friends and SOs who can do it for you.

I have neither at this time, unfortunately.

3. It's because many corporations feel...

...that even outsourcing assembly of their products to children in third world sweatshops for 2 cents an item is an intolerable drain on their profit margins. So they just toss the pieces at their customers and say, "Here, put it together yourself. We can't be bothered."

8. Oh, I know the reasons why
It also allows more units per shipment to have them disassembled, cutting down on shipping costs.

It's also enough to make me flirt seriously with taking up the John The Baptist lifestyle.

11. I predict that, within a decade,...
...Ikea will sell a "dining room suite" that arrives in the form of a tree-trunk and a whittling knife.

12. I've always thought if they were going to charge you extra for assembling the product for you
that they should give you a discount if you took it home to assemble yourself. But that's just me.

18. Start buying used stuff.
I actually LIKE building things and using my power tools. Hell, maybe I should hire myself out to put things together for people.

19. I kinda like assembling stuff, which is...
a good thing because my car is so small. Most of the time I can put stuff together by just looking at the picture on the carton.

But, when I can't, I hate with a passion instructions translated in China that don't tell you what that last part is for, where it goes, or what it does.

And I hate even more parts that don't line up as they should.

21. SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED?!!!
Where do you live? I'm coming right over. I love to assemble things!

:bounce:

5000 piece jigsaw puzzles, Lego models, bikes, cabinets, shelving, storage barns... bring 'em on!!!

Sick, I know.

:freak:

Blame my parents who 'dropped out' in the 70's when I was a kid. They quit their jobs, bought 40 acres, and we built a 3600 sq ft log cabin ourselves.

23. I understand.
I don't mind DIY but the first few times I found it quite daunting, and I'm usually pretty good at reading arcane instructions.
