I used to drive cross country for my trucking gigs. Now I don't leave Ohio. I'm home every day now and I have the weekends off. The pay is as good as many over-the-road positions, but I still find myself yearning for the road sometimes. I love the country out west. I miss meeting all of those interesting people on the road. I like being in L.A. and walking around in a t-shirt in January. I miss the beautiful pine forests in New England. I like running 75 mph across Nebraska with nothing to see but the sky and the fields. I've seen snow in September in Wyoming and in May in Nevada. A lot of people don't know this, but Salt Lake City is in one of the most beautiful areas of the country with huge mountains just behind the city to the east. I miss going up to Canada, but not the customs officials :). I miss situations like I encountered in the border town of Laredo, Texas one time. A couple of Mexicans at a truck stop offered me $2000 to take 15 of them in my trailer across the check point on I-35. I said, "no," of course. I was watching them talk to another driver and they caught his ear, yes they did. I met an author and an actor out on the road. Gave a ride to a hitch hiker who told me to drop him right in the middle of the southwest Texas dessert. There was nothing for miles around. Don't know what he was thinking.
Over-the-road driving is hard on your body, but if you are in the right situation in life it can be good for your soul. It was right for me 11 years ago, not so much now. But I still miss it.
