This is one of those days where I really miss Warren Zevon
His live album "Stand In The Fire" was a real carpet-bombing excursion, probably a shock for those who considered him to be a "sensitive singer-songwriter"...yeah, he was that, but he could also express Lou Reed-style rage and disillusionment. The song that grabbed me by the throat on this one was "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead"...the live version just blowtorches the original.

So much to do, there's plenty on the farm
I'll sleep when I'm dead
Saturday night I like to raise a little harm
I'll sleep when I'm dead

I'm drinking heartbreak motor oil and Bombay gin
I'll sleep when I'm dead
Straight from the bottle, twisted again
I'll sleep when I'm dead

Well, I take this medicine as prescribed
I'll sleep when I'm dead
It don't matter if I get a little tired
I'll sleep when I'm dead

I've got a .38 special up on the shelf
I'll sleep when I'm dead
If I start acting stupid
I'll shoot myself
I'll sleep when I'm dead

So much to do, there's plenty on the farm
I'll sleep when I'm dead
Saturday night I like to raise a little harm
I'll sleep when I'm dead

Warren was no one-trick pony. He's been gone for four years (he died on September 7, 2003), and what he said in the days before his passing bears repeating today:

"Enjoy every sandwich."
