Japanese predominate within the building, which also has a sizable elderly haole contingent. Outside is a Korean business strip, complete with its own UPS Store(TM) that specializes in shipping stuff to and from Korea.

do you live in a mixed ethnicity neighbourhood?

Duh! There are very few haole enclaves on the island, and they tend to be upper-income precincts such as Lanikai over on Kailua Beach.

30. We're not breaking it around here either. ... but travel a mile...
and it's black, black, black. Travel another mile and you get Hispanic, Hispanic, Hispanic.

There's a few mixed neighbourhoods around our area, but that's mostly people with some actual money. Those with less cash tend to get ghetto-ized - blacks and hispanics tend to be in the 'hood, whites tend to be in the trailer parks.

Of course all of this is a generalization and I know "trailer parks" with a good mixture of people and I've seen some white people live in the 'hood. But that's how it appears to me - the casual observer.

Mark.

The farm behind my place down in the valley is owned by a Laotian man & his family. The nearest neighbor down the road one way (a half mile) is a baptist church whose members are African American. The preacher lives next to his church. The other neighbor going the other way is an older white couple. My NEAREST neighbors are cows if they count. They are the ones that make too much noise. :-)

33. You name it, we've probably got it
By my estimate: 40% White, 30% African American, 20% Hispanic, 10% Everyone else. We get a lot of grad students, retired people and working class families because the rents are comparatively low and public transportation is handy, but it's still a quiet, relatively safe neighborhood.

I like it here.

34. Crackers and Rednecks as far as the eye can see.
Hold me.

It seems that many folks in my area, central Indiana, are very guarded and not overly friendly. If you didn't go to their high school or attend their church you're an outsider and I haven't found a group of 'outsiders' to hang with yet. I'm very social, love to entertain, but have done very little of that in the last 6 years (since we moved here). :(

I really miss my old neighborhood in So Cal. Lots of great people, very mixed bunch. We were all about BBQ block parties.

Maybe I'm simply seeing the difference between a more rural/conservative population compared to urban dwellers. I'm at a loss for a good answer. It's just the way it is here. Mr. Green Meanie and I talk often of moving to Chicago sooner than later.

I'm in a very rural area. My closest neighbors informed me that, "We do not glorify demons here." when I was decorating for our first Indiana Halloween. The gargoyle on the front porch has really unnerved many of my neighbors. It's a shame, because we do have a killer firepit out back and weenie roasts just about every Saturday night in the spring and fall. I'd throw a hoedown, but something tells me that they probably don't dance either.

Hell, If I want beer I have to go to the interstate truck stop 20 minutes away or drive more than 30 minutes to Indy!

2000 Census info from the nearest town: 14,520 people, and 5,366 households residing in the town. The racial makeup of the town was 97.44% White, 0.32% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.78% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races.

My parents wanted me and my brother to have the "Jewish experience", because apparently my mom grew up all depressed because she lived in an Italian neighborhood and was the only Jewish kid for a few blocks. So we live in an extremely Jewish neighborhood.

Naturally, I'm kind of the neighborhood freak... the little non-social queer Jewish pagan activist kid.

(Although, and it might surprise anyone who didn't know our town well, we do have a significant Tibetan population; close to 200 in a town of 9,000.)

Ramón and his family are Mexican. He's from Jalisco, I think.

Dottie's another WASP and Ebbie's black.

Here's how the county breaks down, as of the 2000 Census:

* Hispanic (47.9%)
* White Non-Hispanic (46.0%)
* Other race (24.9%)
* Two or more races (5.1%)
* American Indian (2.2%)
* Filipino (1.2%)
* Black (1.1%)

My next door neighbors are Jamaican and Puerto Rican on either side, there's another Puerto Rican family a few doors down, across the street there are white and black people, some of them Muslim. Somehow we all manage to get along nicely. Oh, I'm white, a Polish/Slovak/Austrian mutt.

77. Mostly either black or white
I live in an apartment complex in a college town, so my neighbors are mostly college students or older people without a lot of money. Judging by the folks I see hanging out outside the most, I'd assume this complex was majority black, but I think it's just that more of them are likely to hang out outside of their apartments. The guy who lives above me is pretty social and is always throwing barbecues so there are usually bunches of people hanging out outside my apartment!

The racial makeup of my county:

White 69.12%
Black or African-American 23.88%
Asian .77%
Native American .35%
Pacific Islander .05%
"From other races" 4.42%
Two or more races 1.41%
Hispanic or Latino of any race 14.11%

I live in a small Iowa town with a meat packing plant. Many years ago the plant went after cheap labor. Now the town is nearly half Hispanic. Most of the town's growth has been with the Hispanic community. Many have been here longer than me. Some are 3rd even 4th generation.
And not all are from Mexico. Many from Central America. Some even from South America. I think our town is turning the corner from some serious struggles.

My neighborhood is pretty diverse (for Seattle)--Hispanic, white, African-American/African, Southeast Asian, Japanese.

We're in an area that has traditionally been home to immigrant populations, so some of those populations have a real foothold here. At the same time, as the housing market (still fairly hot here :eyes:) has pushed wealthier buyers into our neighborhoods.

:( I'd love to see some more diversity, but we happen to live in an area with about 80-90% caucasian.

on edit: well actually, our across-the-street neighbors are a multi-cultural family. We don't really have much in common with them cuz they're major fundie Christians who pack up and leave town every Halloween, among other things. He's Chinese and she's British. There's some diversity, I suppose.

I think the family is of Irish descent based on the husband's last name... but, I can't tell for sure if anything else is mixed in. He's always traveling for work, so we've barely had time to talk. (we moved in 10 months ago, they moved in maybe 2-3 months later)

There are several other Chinese families, some Indian and at least one Pakistani family, though most are white. There is also a Vietnamese/Korean couple a few homes down, and at least one other Korean family. The husband in one of the Chinese families is a top stem-cell researcher. There are a couple of African-American families, but I'm not sure about Hispanic-American.

109. WASP, German, Hispanic, Egyptian, African-American, African, ....
The immediate neighborhood is in the process of a long, slow shift from an all-white middle-class neighborhood to a much more diverse middle-class neighborhood. It is not uncommon for the local schools to have kids from 90 nations, as the DC area is a magnet for immigrants from all countries.

We are part of the diversity as I am white and my wife is black.

We also have a family a few houses away where the wife and kids are deaf, but not the husband. One of the kids now attends Galludet University.

Lots of Indians in this area, and I have had a couple of students named Priyanka, by the way. Of course, I have had an Indian uncle-by-marriage, and a set of Indian-American cousins. My uncle and aunt are now divorced, however.

112. I might live in the most ethnically diverse place in America (or the world)
In my 6 flat building we have, white Americans, Belgians, Philippine, Indian, Pakistani and although not a ethnicity, gay folks.

Neighborhood, African American, African, Hispanic in all its permutations, Indian, Russian, Vietnamese, Thai, Korean, American Indian, and a lot others that I'm forgetting.

Supposedly about 88 languages are spoken in my neighborhood.

All that said, the place is a dump and I can't honestly tell anyone to move here.

113. Chinese, my entire street, except us and a next door neighbor who rents from a Chinese owner
When the lots were going up for sale for development in 1999, a Chinese born agent bought 20 lots that constituted the entire street. Later, he sold the houses to Chinese born people at lower prices than he offered to other folks. He was taken to court for that little move, but the houses had already been bought. In 2003, we bought one of the houses from one of the original Chinese owners. We have a lot of Grandparents in the neighborhood taking care of the grandkids, taking walks etc. Some of the families harvest from their gardens well into January - I think the older folks lived through the Cultural Revolution. The Christmas Lights they put up stay up until Chinese New Years as well, which is a pleasant thing.

Move outside of this street and you have European Americans, more Chinese, Indians, Pakistanis, Other Assorted Asians, African Americans and Hispanics - in that approximate order. The local Elementary School is mixed thusly:

38% Asian
37% White
15% African American
8% Hispanic
2% Native American

I've noticed a funny thing about the Chinese kids, before they head off to Kindergarten, I only hear them speaking Chinese. By the end of their stint in Kindergarten, they're speaking English with no accent and use the language as though it was the first one they learned.

121. That's interesting
My wife is Chinese and I've noticed that Chinese are often far more likely to take advantage of other Chinese than they are of other ethnic groups. I know that is different than other ethnic groups over the years, too.

As an example, a few years back, my wife booked a tour through a Chinese travel agency. The tour itinerary they sent to us was different than what they had advertised, and my wife called them up immediately and was arguing on the phone with them for a good hour, and made no progress in getting what we booked for what we paid.

So, she had me call them up and I just asked them why we got the wrong itinerary and the problem was miraculously resolved. I'm certainly not a negotiator at all, either.

and, I know it's similar if you work in a small to mid sized business as well. I've heard stories from several Chinese that if there is one Chinese person working there, they will almost always not get along with a new Chinese employee.
