DU Geek Roll call!
Edited on Thu Dec-13-07 01:51 AM by Writer
dictionary.com definitions:

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/geek (Which definition do you most fit? :P)

geek Slang.
–noun
1. a peculiar or otherwise dislikable person, esp. one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.
2. a computer expert or enthusiast (a term of pride as self-reference, but often considered offensive when used by outsiders.)
3. a carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken.

~Writer the Geek~ here! (Ummmm... I think I most closely fit #2, with bits of #1. I've never tried #3 but it seems interesting.)

6. Same here, though I draw the line at birdie head-biting
Birds are too smart and cute to do that to them.

Now puppies, on the other hand...

First two pets I ever owned were a pair of cuban tree frogs named Sam and Frodo. :P

Of course, I named them BEFORE I found out Sam was a girl...

32. My cat's named Gandalf the Grey...
whose name, depending on his behavior, can morph into acceptable alternatives such as "Gandalf the Spaz" and "Gandalf the Breaker of Many Things."

My dog's name is Pippin, otherwise known as Peregrine Took.

15. another geek checking in
I guess I most fit into category one.

But, if you go a bit further:

1. A person regarded as foolish, inept, or clumsy.
2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.

18. Here.
I most often in life fit the definition of #1. I'm still considered over-intellectual (although in today's American pop culture, overly-intellectual is anyone who can string a coherent sentence together... ) but I'm actually enjoying a sustained period of personal popularity right now for the first time in my life. I like it. :-)

26. I'm posting from a home built computer running Debian.
http://www.us.debian.org

I first logged onto the internet in 1979.

I have built computers entirely from scratch -- soldering individual components onto a circuit board of my own design.

I've written Fortran programs on punched cards.

I am a number two geek of the worst sort, and in my formative geek years I was a number one geek too. The most hideous horrible skeletons hiding in my closet were recorded for posterity on nine track tapes.

I would never bite the head off a live chicken.

37. Definitely #1
I have two bumper-stickers I made on my car:

"Go Miskatonic University - Fighting Cephalopods"
"Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes" (if you can read this, you're overeducated)

...and I once named a car "Gandalf"
