Want to see the best film of 2007 you've never heard of? Rent "Once".
My wife and I both loved this musical (yes, musical) about an Irish street musician who meets his muse. I just made the plot sound trite, and maybe it is, but like it's hero it packs unexpected power. I will admit that the music fits me to a "T" and that's part of the reason why I loved it, but mostly it's because it's a simple story told incredibly well.

Don't take my word for it; check out what the critics thought:

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/once/ (98% on the Tomatometer!)

If you've seen this movie, please check in. If you haven't, I promise you won't be disappointed.

I hope the Academy doesn't forget about this. It should AT LEAST get a couple of best song nominations.

1. Thanks for the recommendation.

My father is in the academy, and we get the "for your consideration" screeners, but I don't remember that one coming in (we keep track). I'll look for it...

Edit: Implying that the distributor isn't behind it enough if it's not being mentioned or sent for consideration.

4. Although it's won numerous awards, including the Audience Award at Sundance,
It wasn't nominated for any Golden Globes. The chances that this movie will be nominated for Oscars are probably pretty slim. However, the soundtrack was nominated for a Grammy....

2. Someone at work just recommended this to me last week
and I commented that I had never heard of it. She loved it..her husband however was bored and dubbed it a "chick flick"..Guess you don't agree...;-)

5. Saw it.
I happened to have had a pounded headache when I watch it, so I probably didn't enjoy it as much as I could have, particularly the loud bits.

I watched a kung fu movie a few months ago, based on an alledgedly good book. The thing is, the plot turned out to be just bits to fill in the gaps between the fight scenes. "Once" was the same way, except it was music instead of fighting.

Good movie. Maybe, I think, a bit overhyped. I don't think I'd call it a musical.

8. I couldn't get through it
My brother put it on when we were visiting for the holidays. He, his wife and my wife watched the whole thing. I couldn't take the music and had to go watch the kids play Rockband.
For what its worth I can't stand musicals and walked out of Rent at the theater.
