with the media, internet and similar forms of entertainment/information/news etc - you have your own filter - essentially just don't watch/read/listen/visit to that particular venue

but in daily interaction with other people, or even random exposure to media - encounters of the DOLT kind are almost impossible to avoid

Cell phones for example are more than just phones - they have the ability to take pictures/videos, access the internet, and more.

so let's add one more feature to the cell phone - the DOLT filter. You simply select the parameters according to your definititon of a dolt, and hit the save button. When the cell phone is active, a dome of IGNORE is put up around you when any dolt is within a "x" ft. radius

...in the post-singularity future, we can simply edit people out of our reality by setting filters similar to the ones you describe. Our neurally-interfaced personal computer systems prevent us from seeing those we don't wish to, while also altering our walking trajectories so that we don't bump into those we can't see. Of course, the rerouting is done in such a manner we're not even consciously aware of walking around someone on our "ignore" list.

I suppose the alternative would be something like the world in Clarke/Baxter's "The Light of Other Days," where anyone can directly access anyone else's entire life (using the McGuffin of a "wormcam" that can view any moment in the past), as easily as we scan through a DVD. Then, we'd quickly realize we're all dolts, which might inject a welcome note of humility into our species.
