Anyone here practrice Yoga?
I've agreed to try some classes.

Have I doomed myself?

1. You will feel great.
I used to do it regularly, and then I got really lazy, but IIRC it felt wonderful!

Enjoy :hi:

2. It's wonderful! You'll be glad you did it!
What style of yoga is it, do you know? I've done a lot of Iyengar, myself. I'm not as regular in my practice as I once was, but I recommend it!

6. Not doomed.
Let me give you an idea of what to expect.
By far, the vast majority in the class will be women. They will have nice bodies and you will find yourself looking at them.
Most of the asanas (positions) require more flexibility than most men have. You might want to do some stretching on your own before you start the classes so that you are able to make the most of the classes.
You will find that classes taught by men have a very different energy than those taught by women. Male teachers seem to emphasis the strength and power of asanas while women teachers tend to emphasize the flexibility of asanas.
Go in with an open mind and heart. Allow yourself to get into whatever happens in the class, such as mediation and chanting.
If you are open, you may be surprised at how much yoga can do for you. Not only will it increase your physical flexibility, it can help you to release emotions. Emotions can be trapped in your body and yoga asanas can help you release them. BTW, this belief is not unique to yoga. I get acupuncture and it has helped me release emotions trapped in my body.

Namaste!

7. it's great if you have a good teacher
you need to learn to do all the "salute to the sun" poses/options and you'll work out every muscle group in your body, w/o a lot of strain. I've slacked off (that and everything else) but if I had any sense I'd be doing it right now.

balance positions are good for concentration, too.

13. I practiced buying a dvd and shelving it with the movies :(
I had intentions.
I don't think I have the patience for it, I exercise when I'm walking places and cleaning and gardening.. then it's like 2 for 1 benefits :headbang: I need to focus on relaxing sometimes so maybe I should try it.

14. Yes - on and off for 38 years
I've been practicing faithfully every day since Jan. Everytime I practice, I wonder why I ever stopped. I took formal lessons in Hatha yoga for one year back in 1980. Before that I learned from a friend who took lessons at a YMCA.

You'll love it. Especially if you have a good teacher. Have fun :hi:.

18. Not doom
but you will find that you haven't used some muscles that you didn't know you had, and will walk away from there feeling better oxygenated, and peaceful.

I'm far, far from being an expert, but that was my experience with it. Very short lived one though.

Maybe you'll find a date

20. You have not doomed yourself!
I went to classes for a while, and then bought tapes and then a DVD. I do it at home now, in the morning before my husband gets up. I can tell when I don’t do it; I have less energy and get aches. Have fun and it is good for you!

22. Hey Retro, I've thought about it a LOT lately.
I actually talked to someone who is into Zen meditation (not that it's the same thing) but all of these ideas sound good to me, as I am trying to control stress and learn better how to react to what my body is telling me. NOT to control my body and my stress, but to get a handle on my reaction, which is they key, in my opinion anyway. I hope the classes work out well for you.

24. I just finished my Beginners Series of classes.
LOVED it! I went into it totally insecure (oh, I'm too old, my butt is too big, I'll look funny, I'll fall over, I'll humiliate myself in front of the cool kids, etc), but came out a convert.

I am now a yoga addict. It's brought me some peace of mind and body during a stressful period of life.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

25. I love my yoga classes. I go at least 2x per week, 4 if I can work it
out. I could not do many of the positions when I first began and now can do almost everything without problems. it is very relaxing and the stretching feels so very good.

I have been plagued with joint and back problems. The Yoga has helped with all the joint pain except my hands. Posture is better too.

A word of advice: it is not a competitive sport. You don;t have to keep up with anyone but yourself. My yoga instructor is always telling us to ignore what the rest of the class is doing. So the only person I compare myself to is me
