6. Nope. My own mother said to me on several occasions: "If you can't be good-looking,
try to dress nicely and be well-groomed."

Here's me in 7th Grade, dressed nicely and well-groomed:

I don't know if anything happened, but nowadays, I'm happy with the way I look.

Here's me and my lovely wife, both dressed nicely and well-groomed:

9. man, this one made me think...
... I had a window of a few years in my late teens. I had gobs of hair on my head (and none on my back), and I think I was a little mysterious seeming or something.... loads of girls were into me, but I was too stupid to realize that I would very soon be a creepy old man, so I didn't really capitalize on it.... that's what I get for being a romantic. If I could go back in time, I'd probably be a total dog.

I hadn't thought about this for years, but this was basically (realizing just now on reflection) the proudest moment of my life: I was at a concert when I was 18 (and drunk as a fool can be), and this girl came up and grabbed my ass. We proceeded to go to the balcony of the theatre and make out and grope until we were kicked out. That ruled.

She and I actually saw each other a few times after that, but she totally sucked and her family were nut jobs, so it didn't last. Still, almost ten years later she looked me up and sent me an email, which is kind of crazy (so I guess she thought I was pretty awesome). I didn't know what to say... that I was a totally different person (I don't think I mentioned fat and bald). She's a single mom (wonder how that happened...) and a special ed. teacher.

Man.... now I just realize what a total loser I am now. Thanks a lot!

That window's closed now...unless your'e a rich old blind guy--then let's talk....

I know what gold lame (with an accent mark) Sassons were! Ha ha. I'd still wear that stuff if it fit and I had an occasion! It reminds me of staying out all night in the clubs and going to work the next day with half of someone else's outfit on and the gold things from the night before!!

Now if I turn heads, it's probably because there's toilet paper coming out the back of my pants!!

25. Some boys cried
Hippie chick, smart top of the class, 5'3 and 36 - 22 - 34, waist length blonde hair. Learned to make my own rules, never went without a date from 15 til I got married at 25. Hit on by teachers and lots of dads whose kids I babysat (ick!) Stayed a virgin until I was 19, but never played any guy for a fool.

I didn't date all the boys, but I was still their friend and loved to hang out with them. Always liked hanging with them more than the girls. When I got breast cancer at 44 and lost both breasts and nearly died, the old boyfriends mourned and sent me letters and emails. I love them all and still stay in touch.

There's no way to prevent it yet, but if you get it, fight it.

Take charge and make sure you're getting the best care that the latest scientific evidence offers. Research changes cancer care guidelines all the time. Most docs can't keep up with the latest - find one that can. Then fight and survive.

This was my jr. year... hanging out with my best pal Steve:

Here's me trying to be all respectable and stuff; my JROTC drill team was in the staging area for the Thanksgiving Parade in Charlotte NC.

Then i said to hell with it, and decided to just be me! This was the first of several mohawks i've had in my life:

36. Hell, no. I was a big fat waste of space.
I can make fun of myself, so bugger off.

I was approaching 300 unfit lbs. 44" waist, just a big tub of shit with no drive, no desire to be healthy or fit. I had given up on me. I'd like to not talk about my small victories at the time. I'm not proud of them.

That was some time ago. I'm thankful for my...evolution. Not just for me, but for the folks I've helped and continue to help along the way.

79. More so now than then...
I never really had self-confidence when I was younger. I'm a gawky fat angry-seeming* man. That generally suffices as a descriptor of me at 15,17,20,23 and the present.

What changed is actualization...I'm not getting thinner, I have hair in the wrong places and not the right ones, I have a terrible job. I have other things to offer. I'm brilliant, possess diverse interests, kind, politically-conscious, artistic, activist, enjoy cooking and food/beverage prep, child-like, witty, worldly and super-literate. I'm hot stuff because I have depth and that realization gives me more self-confidence than looks ever would. I have a youthful face, people don't believe me when I say I'm 28. I'll pass for 30 at 50. I'm not the hottest guy in my circle of friends but I'm the one that people want to date.

* - How angry-seeming? I used to be a bouncer in a notorious DC live-music club and never threw a punch. It's all in the stare-down and resolute tone of voice.

Now I'm hot! Ooh La La!! ;)

Hey?

None of us ever had never really had self-confidence when we were younger. ;)

It was all a game of survival. We all used what we were given, sooner or later.

In my case, later. Yeah, all the boys were chasing me and I thought of myself
as fat even though I was 127 lbs most of the time but I was also a fighter!

"DON'T FUCK WITH ME OR YOU'LL REGRET IT!!!"

Was I defensive much? :P You bet!

But I also had my brothers as back up. So much for 'Bravado"...

Probably also self protective but I could KICK ASS and still can! ;)

But I'm really not like that anymore. I'm a sweetheart now and I'm guessing you are too. ;)

very lean and rather breastless (breasts of course being of utmost importance to most men :eyes: No I'm not joking). I swear I get more attention as I get older although the peak... it may have been reached and surpassed. These days I get more attention than I warrant, being young-looking for my age and still nicely shaped. An oft posted photo of me in my flamboyant youth:

I get more looks in a dirty t-shirt and jeans now than I ever did then. Of course now my personality is the barrier. :P

I worked out 2 hours a day, 6 days a week at the time. I spent quite a bit of time at the mall and poring over fashion magazines to get the perfect "look". Unfortunately, that was the year 2000. I wish I'd focused my energies on political activism. :(

Not exactly a bombshell or anything, but I was aware of at least three guys from second grade to tenth grade who had crushes on me. :) I have no idea if any other guys or girls had crushes on me, but I found out about those.

I still sort of look like the "girl next door", but I think I've improved with age.

I don't consider myself ugly by any stretch of the imagination, but I have never been "hot," nor do I necessarily want to be. When I rig up, I inevitably end up with an older quality about me, despite my five feet of height and small breasts. This is particularly true when I don my infamous pantsuit for more professional events. :D

108. I was not "pretty." I'm still not. I am, however, at times funny and smart.
One man has ever told me I am beautiful, and I am married to him. Beyond that I was the one that just kinda hung out with all the vivid people and partied a lot. Had a hell of a good time and I learned how to hold my own in most social settings and how to have fun with just about anybody.

Sounds jaded as hell, I guess, but I gave up on being a beauty queen a long time ago. I focused on making my own world as complete as I could and on finding people to share my world that appreciated who I am and what I am capable of. If it was beyond somebody's ability to value me as I stand then I had zero energy to spend on them.

What has amazed hell out of me is the realization that as I have aged (I just hit 48) I am now more highly sought after by men. I don't look any better, but I do think that for some of them the ability to converse and personal competence has become more attractive. I honestly think that as we all age some of we start to look for companions rather than objects. It has been a liberating realization.

Very tall 5'8", then puberty. Finally gained some body fat. 125lbs., filled out nicely :D

You knew you were in when the leacherous High School English teacher surrounded his desk with the pretty girls with the boobs. (Now I say Ick!!)

I never lacked for a boyfriend after 16. My mother found it unnerving and was very envious.

Now we experience the same thing with my #2 daughter, however I am not jealous at all, I revel in her beauty and brains! Lethal combo, just like hotmamma.

140. my hair was awesome until I was about 5
it was fluffy and curly and light brown. An old blind lady at my church liked touching it.

Then it got all dark and wiry and Mrs. Brown died. :-(

145. I was a nerd all through high school
Very late bloomer, flatchested, thick eyeglasses, skinny, extremely shy, and one of the favorite targets of the school smartasses.

In my senior year, I got contact lenses and somehow metamorphosed into a slim, stacked 5'7" blonde with green eyes. Unfortunately in my head I was still a total loser, so when the cute new guy (that everyone else was drooling over) asked me out, I was sure that he was making fun of me, and turned him down. I never quite got over thinking that I was still the school scapegoat, even in college.

Now I'm 56,overweight, can't wear contacts because of dry eyes. The blonde hair has turned dark over the years. Hot stuff I am definitely not. But the other day, after listening to her weep about her many problems and offering her a little comfort, the 28-year-old bipolar daughter of one of my oldest friends said, "You're beautiful!" I just glowed.
