Two job rejections today
A company emails me and invites me to apply for an open position because they've seen my resume on the internet. So, I go to their website and apply. This mostly consists of pasting in my resume and submitting it. Two weeks later they send me a letter in the mail rejecting me.

I apply for a job at a company website. Its a good fit. Three weeks later someone from their HR department calls me. We have a good conversation and then he asks me some technical questions, which he doesn't understand because he has no technical background. So when I ask "what do you mean by..." to one of the questions he can't answer me. Today he leaves me a phone message and says they are no longer considering me. I rarely get past phone interviews.

I need a job. This is getting me down.

1. Human resources is a useless position IMO for most hiring decisions.
I once had an interview for a fundraising position with one of the largest NPOs in the US in which I asked the following complex and difficult questions of the HR director:

"How much is your organization's yearly budget and what percentage of that is raised by funding initiatives I will be involved in?"
Her response:
My response: :(

"What are your major funding initiatives?"
Her response:
My response: x(

"What percentage of your funds raised come from unsolicited donors?"
Her response:
My response:

"One part of this job is grant writing...what are some of the grants you received this year?"
Her response:
My response: :wtf:

Anybody in fundraising/development can tell you that if you do not know the answers to those questions...you have no right conducting the interview for a development coordinator.

3. Most of the time I get contract jobs
through technical recruiters- and the communication is good. The recruiter works between the candidates and the manager and I get work, 6 wks to a year long. Its hard to get a permanent job without going through human resources though. HR people are useless for technical positions and they don't belong in the process, as far as I'm concerned.

8. I always try to get...
interviewed by the person or section hiring and avoid HR until necessary. This is where professional contacts and moxie come in handy. I peruse the company phone directory and try to make contact with someone in that section. The last three jobs I got were that way and they were great positions. As a Nurse-it is a little easier, but I did it when I was in the oil biz too. With HR you have to either charm the shit out of them or side step them (I pump a lot of info out of them too.)

9. Really hard to do over the phone
when the HR person is practically reading a script and they're your only contact. It was an accounting firm, not my ideal environment anyway.
