True story: I was in Boston last week on vacation. Got a lot of "whassup" looks when I'd tell them I was a Detroiter. On our last night there, during a horse-drawn carriage ride, I just told the driver: "I'm not a big-time basketball fan; I say let the best team win. I am, however, a huge hockey fan - Go Wings!" He was okay with that, once he was able to say "Go Celtics." ;-)
