Edited on Mon Aug-04-08 11:05 PM by HEyHEY
Seems to me you take names first, then kick the asses of the people whose names you took.

since that particular Han Solo quote was in a book from that came out shortly after the original trilogy... then several years later Lucas decided to edit in the whole 'Greedo shot first' crap. :P

7. I was not thinking about Hans Solo.
Thinking more of the cliche in detective fiction.

8. it is like notches on a bed post --
You can't take their name until you kick their ass.

Then you pass the list onto YOUR boss to prove that you are worth the big money he is paying you.

13. It shows restraint.
Usually when I kick ass I do it so hard people aren't capable of giving names afterward.

16. You need to take names first...
...just in case you have to stop kicking ass for some reason. Later, you can go back to your list, confident that you will not forget any ass.

22. That's why I keep an assistant around when I'm kicking ass.
It's simple really, I kick someone's ass, they jot down the name of the ass-kickee on their clipboard. For posterity, you see.

Like "I don't give a fuck who you are, you're getting your ass kicked".

24. You are ASSUMING it happens in that order- it's a common mistake.
The actual phrase is "Kicking ass AND taking names",
which can be interpreted as an either/or situation
in which the ass-kicking is reserved for those who fail
to provide a name, on a case-by-case basis.

26. Perhaps if you ask for names first, people will assume you want to kick their asses next...
So they will do some Bushesque "preemptive ass-kicking" and kick your ass first.

"HEY, what's your name? YEAH, YOU!!! I'm talking to you!!! I WANT YOUR NAME, NOW...OW!!...OW!!...OW!!...OW!!..."
