ID3 tags for MP3 files should be able to be tagged for multiple genres...
I'm looking at my iPod library right now and there are too many bands that span multiple styles and subgenres that putting them into a single genre is hard. Web 2.0 can do it, why can't MP3s?

1. Obsession over tagging MP3 files will destroy your life
Take it from me.

BTW - I agree completely. I love the way you can tag stuff on LastFM, even though I've wasted tremendous hours doing it.

What do you use for tagging mp3's. I use an older version of MP3Tag Studio.

3. Oh fuck yes, ID3 tags are far too limiting, half my music belongs in "Other"...
and most of them belong to unrelated Genres! What the fuck is up with that shit!

4. Dude - you CAN.
MusicBrainz Picard. http://musicbrainz.org/doc/PicardDownload

Right click on the song (or album) and EDIT - you can put as many as you want in there. There's also a plugin that will grab the top last.fm genres and insert them automagically.

5. But they wouldn't show up under multiple genres in iTunes or on my iPod.

10. Yeah, like I COULD theoretically tag something as "post-hardcore, noise rock, indie" or whatever...
But in its genre in iTunes or whatever, the genre would show up as "post-hardcore, noise rock, indie" rather than having the song show up in the post-hardcore, noise rock, and indie genres.

6. I feel your pain.
I still get upset when I want to categorize a song under multiple artists. Sure the album is a compilation, so the whole album should show up under 'various/album', but each artist's songs should also show up under the artist. Also, a song by one artist, but remixed by another should show up under both, and god forbid that song is on a compilation as well! That's three artist tags I want to apply to that song!

I should be able to tag 1-n items for any piece of information associated with each song.

7. Agreed.
I finally gave up on tagging the damn things. Now, I just do artist, song, and album and leave the rest of it to rot.

8. I'll still tag genre, but it'll usually be a really generic tag.
Or a ridiculous one. I tagged Tenacious D as Satanic Folk.
