My 2-Year Old Granddaughter Declares Victory and Goes to Bed
My granddaughter Hannah has a beautiful smile, which she wears most of the time when I see her and is evident in most of the pictures we have of her – like this one:

But she usually doesn’t like to go to bed.

Recently my son, Hannah’s father, and fellow DUer (EOTE), wrote my wife and me an e-mail describing Hannah’s latest ploy to avoid going to bed:

On Friday, I got home a little late, so Hannah stayed up a bit later so I could spend more time with her. We played for a nice while and then a bit after 8, we decided it was time for her to go to bed. In spite of her being extremely tired, she started screaming as soon as we left the room. First she was yelling for me and then she started screaming for mommy. After about 10 minutes, when neither of us had come for her, she started screaming "Hannah go potty!!!" over and over again.

That was very cunning of her. Hannah’s parents and grandparents have been working diligently on trying to potty train her lately, so she knew that her parents wouldn’t pass up a chance to encourage her potty training. But Hannah wasn’t quite up to the task at the time, as described in her Daddy’s e-mail.

After 5 minutes of that (the screaming), Janelle (Hannah’s mommy) finally gave up and took her to the bathroom:

Not a happy camper

It was obvious that she didn't really have to go and was just using that as an excuse to get out of the crib, as after sitting on the potty for about 30 seconds or so, she nodded off to sleep:

Hannah sleeping on the potty

So, Hannah’s mommy and daddy tried to put her back to bed. But whenever they’d come close to her to try to bring her back to her crib she’d wake up for a few seconds – and then go back to sleep.

Hannah was tired and wanted to go to bed – but she was in a bind because she didn’t want to admit that she failed in her attempt to go potty. Finally she came up with a brilliant idea:

After sitting on her potty for a while and realizing that she really wanted to go back to her crib, she mustered all the strength she had to triumphantly raise her hands above her head and meekly say "Yay Hannah!" (the phrase that we routinely use to provide positive feedback for her successful potty efforts). Needless to say, she went to bed pretty quickly after that.

Yay Hannah!

2. Too smart by half.
I think Firefox has a hard time displaying those pictures. If no pics come up, give IE a try.

The occasional crying at night is a worthy trade-off now that we go through a third as many diapers :)
