Watched "Atonement" last night
for the first time.

It's my weepy time of the month and it certainly filled that bill.

What did you think of it?

1. I thought that was some weak atonement for
what had happened.

But it was a good movie

2. The little girl,
Briony, I just wanted to choke her!

And of course, the whole story could have been cleared up if the adults had just compared notes (like they would in the real world), but it does depend on that WASPish repressed emotion thing we WASPs have going on. *sigh*

17. I think they showed the mother in the film to be very detached. It was believable
that the family would not get to the truth.

3. Dunkirk scene
That was a great rolling, meandering shot on the beach. I wonder how many takes it took.

4. Yes, and being
an Ami, it took me a minute to realize it was Dunkirk instead of D-Day.

We miss the importance of that over here. Just an enormous amount of people.

5. I thought the ending was one of the more ridiculously contrived ones I've seen...
but other than that, it was good.

7. it was abrupt
the way they pulled out of the love story and into the present day. Hardly an elegant transition on the part of the director. But I think Vanessa Redgrave did her part really well.

8. I agree with that. She did the best she could with what she had...
but, hey, it's Vanessa Redgrave. What'd you expect? ;)

18. As you think about the film, you realize that the entire plot...
would have been made irrelevant by a simple conversation between the two sisters, one that would almost certainly have happened at the very outset, regardless of the era in which the movie's set.

As the film was written by two dudes, I can understand the oversight.

I liked the movie when I first saw it. It's visually and technically excellent. But then I came to understand that the story is actually pretty ridiculous.

10. Oh yes, it's worth watching
Beautifully filmed and the acting is superb.

James McAvoy is my young actor crush. I love that Scottish lad.

romance movies make me want to hurl.. which i know is odd for a chick ;)

i'm a cynic, and just tend to not enjoy romance movies. i heard that atonement had some beautiful direction though. :hi:

edit to add: i watched michael clayton the other night.. excellent movie!

13. I have to be in a certain mood for
romance movies. I really don't like the cheezy kind. (I'm looking at you Nicholas Sparks!) So, I'll probably see Nights in Rodanthe, but only because of the NC beach in it. :-) That, and if I were to be a movie star, I think I'd like to be like Diane Lane.

Romances that have some other storyline in the background interest me most... like war, or illness (though that can be overdone too.) It's a fine line and has to do with the skill of the storyteller.

:hi: Ava!

14. definitely, and my problem with the genre is that it does too often seem to be cheesed up
anything with nicholas sparks involved i usually skip.. except for the time i was forced to go see "the notebook", which i thought was cheesy as hell to the point of causing me to laugh at a few points at the absurdity of it all. i understand that some people like the gushy lovey-doviness of it all... i'm just not one of them. not my cup of tea. ;)

i like some romantic comedies, but i think that is because they don't take themselves too seriously.

how are you doing?
