My neighbor died, she was battling breast cancer
I just found out today, I had been away.

She was only 54. God damn this disease!

I remember a sunny day my first fall here in 2006, the three of us went to a flea market and Edith bought this funny looking pottery chime, looked like an old German grandmother. We chuckled because it was so hideous looking, but I took a liking to it. When we were in the car, she gave it to me, and we laughed so hard.

Over the course of the next couple months the cancer spread, and became more vicious. I never saw much of her after that. She was in and out of the hospital. Many nights her poor, weary husband would stay over to comfort her. Days when he came back he looked like something had sucked the life out of him. In a little town, you see people walking alot, and you get to sense their moods. I saw him today and he didn't even look at me. I knew it had happened.

I was taking out the recyclables, and saw my neighbor who lives in the other side of the house from them. I could tell by the look on her face that Edith had lost her battle, she walked across the street and just said, simply -- it happened last week.

So, I took out the old woman chime and thought of Edith for a few moments, remembering her sunny spirit. Only glad that she is no longer in pain.

8. terrible
Most of the females in my wifes family have or have had breast cancer. Her mother, her grandmother, and most of her mothers sisters. it's almost certain she will get have to deal with it someday. I fear for her and my little girl. I hope we make some significant strides in treatment in the near future.
