1. Diet Coke.
Just make sure that you've melted some smoked cheese onto the sammich.

3. Me! Except for the sammiches part (Celiac, ya know)
Tell you what, you keep the bread and the beer and send me the smoked meat. That'll work!:P

Seriously, drink whatever you've got. Water'd be fine, cider'd be great. Red is the traditional wine choice for red meat, but go with whatever makes you happy.

6. The smoked meat up here is delish
Can't find it in Texas, where I used to live. Even the s.o. got hooked on it.

Water you say. Interesting concept.

12. Went to a wedding in Vermont & had a free day, so we drove up to Montreal

Had a smoked meat sandwich at Reuben's, which I understand isn't exactly the elite, but we were very taken with it. As I recall, we had fries and soda on the side, but then, we had a lot of driving to do. (Edit: didn't know I was celiac back then)

4. I voted diet coke.
But real Mexican coke would be best. Also, hope you are using rye bread and serving it with pickles and slaw.

9. You can get real sugar Coke up here as well
but it's way too sweet - not that I look forward to the chemical soup in the diet version to annihilate my joints, but hey.

No rye bread this time - a real light wheat. We don't eat that much bread, so we buy something that goes with anything.

8. If you're confused, smoked meat is roughly the Montreal equivalent of pastrami
though (I am told) far superior, as, it is said, are their bagels. Thus, I would be thinking beer, or perhaps cider, seeing as how it's autumn and all.

And you thought they lived on crepes and quiches and all that Frenchified stuff. :P

10. I've had both
and smoked meat is waaayyy better than pastrami. It's seasoned differently, and to me it just tastes more beefy.

Montreal is like any place else - you have to go to a French restaurant to get French food.

15. I didn't mean that *you'd* be confused!
merely that some members of the audience might not be familiar with smoked meat, as the term is not used in the States. And as we all know, there's nothing outside the U.S. borders but a big bunch of blank white space. :sarcasm: Occasionally that attitude reveals itself even here at the might DU. :eyes:

I hope so. In that case, I agree with the Unibroue suggestion. Maybe Le Fin du Monde?
