The Death of Socrates.

1787. At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Jacques-Louis David (1748-1824)

I might as well stick with the David "death of..." theme I used in yesterday's http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=8154998&mesg_id=8154998
">Death of Murat.

This painting - the Socrates one - was a radical political painting, and an effort was made to suppress it.

1. My dear NNadir...
I love this dramatic painting!

I have never had the good luck to see it in person, but it still moves me...

Thank you for posting it!

2. I have seen it, but it's been too long since I've been at the Met.
I have to take my wife and my boys.

3. Socrates was too intellectual to be that 'cut'.

5. According to Aristophanes, Socrates was...
...a dirty fool.

Of course, Aristophanes also thought that Socrates was a terrorist who coddled William Ayers.

7. I'm pretty sure that he didn't die

in 1787, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Though, really, after his time in San Dimas I guess anything's possible. He's using the wrong finger in this picture, too...damned censors are everywhere.

Who's the other old dead dude who dozed off while watching Matlock?

8. Are you sure?
For the record, you are assuming the cultural universality of hand gestures as used in San Dimas.

Socrates is said to have suggested that his punishment should be to be permanently supported by the Athenian gov't.

In his spare time he was a banker.
