Goodbye Max

Max, mt cat of ten years was put down this morning. Late last night he was dragging his back legs as he was climbing on the bed. His breathing was heavy and his eyes were glassy. I tried to comfort him while trying to figure out what to do. Online, people with cats who had similar problems said it was probably a urinary infection, and a couple posts said it my be a blood clot.

I called the local vet hospital - it wasn't open, but the answering service gave me a hospital that was open. I called, described the symptoms, and they said bring him in. I opened the carrier and he just crawled in. He was quiet the entire ride - about 30 mins. I got there, the doctor checked him and said it was a blood clot. We could wait to see if it goes away (not likely), bring him to Boston and get him on large doses of medicines, but they can have bad side effects, or .... I chose or.

In my life, I have had few that I can say I will always miss. Max is one of them. He was a major extravert, walking into people's homes, purring like mad. Everyone in the neighborhood knew him. He would hunt squirrels and bite their heads off, a nasty habit, but when you saw a headless squirrel or just a tail in the driveway, you know he was trying to show he cared. My favorite thing would be when I would get home from work and he was outside. As I would park the car, he would jump on the front hood climb on the windshield and sit on the roof, purring like mad when I would open the door. People said I look like a dog person; I didn't need one, I had Max.

His younger sister Penny was around this morning and I'm sure she knows he's sick. She sleeping right now and I am getting a feeling of dread - hearing her meow for Max and him not coming to her. I'm hoping she won't; that's gonna eat me up.

Goodbye Max - you will always be with me.
