What's "The Bridge" in your city?
Here in Glass City it's the Lions Gate. It was built in the 30s by the Guiness Family cause they bought a shitload of land in North Vancouver they wanted to access.

Look.

And there are bridges not shown, like the Homestead Highlevel bridge, without which many people would be fucked.

16. What I mean is which is more well-known
The oldest, or most storied, or most whatever.... We have at least ten major ones in Vancouver, but the Lions Gate (Even though it isn't the busiest) is the most well-known just because of its age and design and history.

See those 3 identical ones on the left, they're known as the three sisters and are the first 3 self-anchored suspension bridges in the US.

That one up front on the left was incomplete (the highway it was headed to was delayed) for a long time and known as the bridge to no-where. Someone once drove their car off of it accidentally but landed safely on the other side.

The Smithfield street bridge is the oldest and most ornate.

The hot metal bridge used to be part of a steelmill which as its name indicate carried hot metal. Now it takes you from the university zone to a neighborhood filled with taverns.

The Washington's Crossing bridge was where George Washington crossed in his campaign here in the French and Indian war.

None is really the most well-known.

29 more within the county, and roughly 940 (non railroad) total bridges within the county. Crazy!

Usually "the bridge" is just the nearest one to where you are. "I'm just going across the bridge to pick up some things at the store" or "They live just over the bridge".

Edited on Wed Oct-29-08 05:19 PM by CreekDog
The Bay Bridge is more heavily used (busiest toll bridge in the world I think)
The Bay Bridge has terrible traffic meaning that crossing it is more noteworthy and thus comes up in conversation
If someone is swearing about a bridge, it's definitely the Bay Bridge
Caltrans workers (California's Dept. of Transportation) on the Bay Bridge call the Golden Gate Bridge "The Other Bridge"

27. Wohler Bridge

The Wohler Bridge and Wohler Road connect the two main roads along the Russian River. Eastside Road runs along the Windsor side of the Russian River valley and has fewer wineries, but many large commercial vineyards. It's the quickest way to Healdsburg from Guerneville and Forestville. Westide Road begins near Forestville and is a more scenic and winding road with vineyards and wineries interspersed with redwoods and dairies. Wohler Road connects these two important wine country roads which are both worth exploring.

Most people take the 101 to get from town to town but this backroad (the original way) is VERY beautiful to drive along.

Used to live in good ole Los Angeles with all the overpasses. That's a cool bridge though. Everytime I see it I think it could be used in a horror flick because down there at the end it's dark from all the shade. I like these old bridges, so beautiful in their design.

Its probably the 14th street bridge..The bridge in DC that the Air Florida flight hit..Planes do fly really low over it still.

In terms of biggest and most important for commuting reasons..the under construction Woodrow Wilson Bridge...I think its gonna end up being like a 20 lane bridge!

in 1940. They rebuilt it, and now there are two bridges parallel to each other running across the Narrows.

Personally, I prefer the 21st Street Bridge. A beautiful new cantilever bridge spanning the tideflats to downtown:

It's not exceptional, really, but it's in a neat location, right on the edge of a bluff and a plain, so you can view it from a hundred angles and it looks different every time. Plus, you can see it from a lot of different vantage points.

46. The Detroit-Superior High Level

The Detroit-Superior Bridge, renamed the Veterans' Memorial Bridge several years ago.

It is a massive structure (opened in 1917) that crosses the Cuyahoga River just west of downtown Cleveland, Ohio.

At the time of its opening, and for many years afterward, it was the world's largest double-deck reinforced concrete bridge.

Until 1954 when the city streetcar system shut down, it carried streetcars on the lower deck.

The lower deck and subway tunnels have been closed since then and the present rapid transit system uses a 1929 viaduct nearby that was built for the Union Railroad Terminal.

Twice a year, on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, the county engineering department opens the lower deck and subway station and tunnels at the west end of the bridg for self-guided walking tours.

This is a photo of the east end of the Detroit-Superior, taken from the west approach of the Old Viaduct, its predecessor.

The Old Viaduct was built shortly after the Civil War, with massive stone arch approaches and a swing bridge across the river.

The west approach still stands, strong as ever.

Fifteen years ago, it afforded a classic view of the Cleveland downtown skyline and the entire Detroit-Superior bridge.

Recent development and construction have impinged on the view.

119. Aw ... I love the Cooper River Bridge
How come its a 'horror' to you? Yeah, and I know they call it the Arthur J. Ravenel Bridge now ... but I'm a rebel, it's still the Cooper River Bridge to me.

120. YeeeEEEEeeeeeee
I can't put my finger on it. It's so big, it's open, it's so high. I like to feel (and be) a little more enclosed and/or secure. But not too much, then I get claustrophobic. I rely almost completely on visual cues to keep my balance, and there are not enough vertical lines to go with the horizontal ones.

I could happily spend the rest of my life in a hobbit house - and the Cooper River Bridge ain't a hobbit house!!

51. The Tacony-Palmyra Bridge is exceptionally well-advertised!
It is known of far and wide, in counties outside of Philadelhia, and to people who provide custom to the active liquor market just outside of PA limits--ie--the other side of our border, which is a river, and therefore, serviced by a bridge, and the one where you're best finding the liquor superstores.

If we (PA) ever took down our weird ideas about booze, and they (NJ) taxed cigarettes less , and we all did away with the New Jersey exit tax (bridge tolls) we'd nearly be one state.

52. We seem to have only "low water" bridges in NW Arkansas.
That means that water flows OVER the pavement or non-pavement and impedes progress after a heavy rain.

I tried to find a photo and couldn't.

56. Jerry E. McGee bridge.
It's right down the road from me, literally. It used to be a sharp left hand curve going into it, and a sharp right hand curve going out of it with a huge steep hill of about a 50 foot elevation difference. Now, it is a sharp left hand curve going into it, and a sharp right hand curve going out of it with a slight hill of about 25 foot difference. It's not nearly as fun to ride through it really fast like it was when I was a kid, but that's only because they "fixed" it. I enjoy the hell out of flying through it though. It's probably a good thing they "fixed" it or I'd be dead and haunting that bridge by now.

63. Last time I was in San Francisco, I biked across the Golden Gate.
It amazed me that while I was biking, I didn't get buffeted by the winds. It was only when I stopped that I felt them. And btw, that bike crossing was the first (and so far only) time I crossed it. It was stunning!

100. those are kind of creepy
I've been over I-90 one (I think), the one that goes to Issaquah. It's weird being right at the water level, and don't they break up and sink every so often? I'd hate to be on a bridge if that happened.

My mom called me recently when we were suppose to meet to say she was running late but was near "the bridge." By the time we figured out which bridge she had been near she was at my place.

This may not be in my city but it's close and it's the closest well known bridge.
