What was up with all the blood and gore?

You had the digital short about the painting, with some freakish mass suicide in the auction house. Then the skit with the 4 idiots singing along with Ricky Nelson's "Garden Party" which ended with one of them getting his brains blown out. And then the jumper skit at the ending, which didn't actually show any simulated blood and guts, but implied a "big splatter".

I didn't know if I was watching SNL, or a "Final Destination" movie with a laugh track.

I don't have a problem with dark humor, but it just seemed out of character to have that much of it on that show.
