The Airborne Toxic Event - Sometime Around Midnight Lyrics
And it starts, sometime around midnight.
Or at least that’s when you lose yourself
for a minute or two.
As you stand, under the bar lights.
And the band plays some song
about forgetting yourself for a while.
And the piano’s this melancholy soundtrack to her smile.
And that white dress she’s wearing
you haven’t seen her for a while.

But you know, that she’s watching.
She’s laughing, she’s turning.
She’s holding her tonic like a cross*.
The room’s suddenly spinning.
She walks up and asks how you are.
So you can smell her perfume.
You can see her lying naked in your arms.

And so there’s a change, in your emotions.
And all these memories come rushing
like feral waves to your mind.
Of the curl of your bodies,
like two perfect circles entwined.
And you feel hopeless and homeless
and lost in the haze of the wine.

Then she leaves, with someone you don’t know.
But she makes sure you saw her.
She looks right at you and bolts.
As she walks out the door,
your blood boiling
your stomach in ropes.
Oh and when your friends say,
“What is it? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

Then you walk, under the streetlights.
And you’re too drunk to notice,
that everyone is staring at you.
You just don’t care what you look like,
the world is falling around you.

You just have to see her.
You just have to see her.
You just have to see her.
You just have to see her.
You just have to see her.
You know that she’ll break you in two.

_____________

Or is it just me?

1. The melody of the background counterpoint is like U2's
Edited on Sun Jan-18-09 12:57 PM by truedelphi
And the singer reminds me of someone but cannot say who

All in all, though, it is its own. I really love it.

3. It is U2ish
and I guess you are right about being their own sound.

It was just weird when I first heard it yesterday. I thought it was a new song by an old man hehe.

5. well, Long Story...
it is 38 here now. How long do you think it will take for all the pipes to thaw? I am still worried that they maybe frozen in the back bathroom.

7. We just thawed 2 houses here
Mine was one of them. What. 4 days? gawd.

Mine freezes way out at well so we popped lid and I tosses a space heater in cylinder on low. That got me.

The other place was a "modular home." which means the water freezes under house in crawlspace. I helped them get the underpenning all closed in and we put 2 space heaters under there.

It sucked not having water lol. My "caught water" supply ran out last night. I guess I'm a slacker because thats all it took to get me on task lol.

Can you get under house easily enough to put a SAFE space heater under there? It works an d now is the time..when it's above freezing.

11. I think I have another busted pipe. I turned the electricity on to the
well for 3 seconds and cut it back off. Water is gushing in the crawl space underneath the back door. I am guessing that the length of pipe is busted there as well. It was also wrapped. I have more pipe. I hope this is the last one. :eyes:

Thanks for the hug Inch.

6. My first thought was U2 as well
but after listening to the whole thing, I feel there's more similarity with the Devlins, who seem to love that eternally repeating guitar background. The voice of this band also sounds much like that of the Devlins' lead singer too.

9. If there was no band
If just the singer was singing with an guitar. :P

I'm just whacko, but the very beginning is what led me to think it was this other guy. I'm not sure if it is the style or if it is similar to one of his songs.

15. Early Leonard Cohen?
Edited on Sun Jan-18-09 05:15 PM by netania99
Before his voice got low? But only if you take the band away.

Edited to add: I just saw someone down thread mentioned Cohen, too ...

16. Alright! Instant friends!!!
There must be something to it, eh, if we came to such a relatively far-flung observation independently?

Welcome to DU. Lots of rock and roll chats here in the lounge. Look forward to seeing you around.

14. Yeah...really nice song and arrangement
Love the long slow burn of it all, how it doesn't overstay at any one intensity. Lyrics-wise, it uses the third person device of "she" and it creates a strange emotional distance, almost like a defense mechanism being employed by the singer b/c surely that upwelling intensity the song develops is his, not someone else's, as it moves from "typical night" to the "utter destruction." Like a post-traumatic hypno-therapy session where therapist encourages you to observe events as an outsider. Cohen's "Suzanne" kind of works the same way, for me, intended or not.

Plus I like the band's name. Taken from the central, precipitating event in Don Delilo's novel "White Noise," a book that lots of academics put up there in the best of late 20th American lit.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQAT2rKugIs&feature=channel_page
In the book's second part, The Airborne Toxic Event, a chemical spill from a rail car releases an "airborne toxic event" over Jack's home region, prompting an evacuation. Frightened by his exposure to the toxin, Gladney is forced to confront his mortality. Simuvac is also introduced in Part Two, an indication of simulations replacing reality. It also calls into question the nature of the airborne toxic event.
