Ok, so I started watching BSG....
and I am officially hooked. I apologize for calling it lame earlier. I think I was expecting the usual POS SciFi fare, and this is totally not that. Actual good production values, a gripping plot, plus a hot-ass cylon baddy! I'm only 3 episodes (and half of the miniseries) in, so NO SPOILERS!

6. Was it Aasimov or Heinlein who said that good scifi is about characters?
That's the cool thing about BSG. With only very minor alterations it could be about a Greek fleet coming home from the Trojan War, a wagon train lost beset by indians, or Polynesian sailors trying to find a new island.

Another interesting aspect is the religious one: I'm an atheist, a couple I'm friends with is born-again, and yet we're both hooked by the religious subtext.

Also, the relationship/role of Adama and the President as Mother and Father to the humanity is not only fascinating in its own right, but plays into the aforementioned religious subtext.

And the relationships between characters! Nothing is easy or cut and dried -- just like in real life. And then it gets complicated. Best show on TV, hands down. the secret is that it isn't science fiction, it's just fiction with exotic locales. The prequel series, "Caprica," promises to be even more average and so far looks even better.
