Here's what I don't get about menfolk and movies...
When there's an action-packed scene with little if any actual dialogue, they are practically absorbed by the screen and nothing can pry them away. But when people start talking, particularly if the lines are interesting, you can't get them to shut up.

:wtf:

2. I know what you mean.
My husband is always wondering why I enjoy shows where the people "just sit around and talk."

12. I have to admit, though...
my mother-in-law would talk constantly while the TV was on. But try to turn it off so you could pay attention to what she was saying, and she wouldn't be able to stand it. :eyes:

Maybe it's genetic.

38. It has to do with our alien origins
People with hair on their backs descended from apes, whereas people without hair on their backs are from aliens. Therefore, women are from Venus, but only some men are from Mars.

Peace.

7. Because, our primary sense is visual, that's why.
Far in front of all the others. We like to look, it's that simple. Moving images are best, unless the still picture is of an attractive female, especially an unclothed one. We have problems with speech and hearing, especially speech. Men are much more likely to suffer from hearing loss (17% men vs. 10% women). We have trouble putting thoughts into spoken words. Why do you think boy babies are on average way behind girl babies in verbal development?

Probably goes back to when we hunters on the plains of Africa chasing the next meal. Speech had nothing to do with catching prey if you were a lone hunter after an animal.

19. While that would seem to account for males' action attraction...
it doesn't really explain why many of them feel the urge to talk during movie dialog.

I wonder if it's akin to the wedding prelude phenomenon that I've frequently observed. More often than not, while playing music before the wedding ceremony, guests are talking...sometimes so loudly that they couldn't possibly hear the music we're making. Then, when we pause between numbers, everybody gets really quiet.

20. So you think it's due to lack of interest in the subject?
Could be sometimes, I guess. I was noticing this while we were watching Band of Brothers, though. Seems like they would have been interested in the dialog...

10. Oh yeah?
At least action flicks don't cause relationships to break up due to unrealistic expectations. Check it:

Next time you take a date to the movies, see a horror flick. At least if you want to stay together.

That's the advice researchers at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh have for would-be couples.

Romantic comedies, or "rom-coms," promote unrealistic expectations of love and relationships, according to their study.

Researchers had 100 student volunteers watch the 2001 romantic comedy "Serendipity," and 100 more watch a creepy David Lynch movie.

Students watching "Serendipity" were found to be more likely to believe in fate and destiny. Fans of romantic comedies were also found to have a stronger belief in predestined love.

22. If people take rom-coms that seriously, I shudder to think
what action and horror flicks do to folks.

But I wasn't putting down action flicks...I was just commenting that the males in my house pay rapt attention to the action elements of a movie while ignoring any dialog. Most movies are a combination of action and words...

15. OMG! You are so right!
It's the same with sports. My SO can't seem to watch sports without being likewise glued to the commentary (even though he can clearly see what's going on). But put on a show where dialogue is essential, and he'll yak right through it.

except for an occasional comment here and there.

I sometimes get annoyed when someone wants to talk over the soundtrack, too. :D
