1. Nope.
Oh I think it has some entertainment value. My mom was all into the Love signs/Sun signs/personality thing while I grew up which was interesting, but as far as predictive of anything. Hell no.
I'm a skeptic.

7. I remember wandering into one of those new agey stores with an ex once
There was a book combining Chinese and Western Astrology together. I thought it was fucking genius some hippy figured out how to milk two bullshit belief systems to make one unique pile of shit.

I think there's a real future in this. Think about Scientology mixed with Jehovah's Witnesses! Muslim's and Odenists together as one!! The possibilities are limitless...

2. It's bullshit
Why should the personality of someone born on July 19 differ markedly from that of someone born a week later?

Yeah, no reason.

If the claim was a loose correlation between personality and the season you were born in, that could possibly make some some sense, but the day? No.

4. It's like how any other random thing can make you think of something
you need to work on. Opening the Bible to a random page can do the same thing -- even for a non-believer (and I'm one of those). At the same time, opening my eyes at any random moment to what's going on in the street outside my home can do the same thing. For me, anyway. If you're seeking, you're gonna find _something_.

35. If that's the case
Why make a ritual out of it. Why not open up the horoscope and have some therapist/overpaid expert/homeless person (doesn't matter who it is) tell you to think about your mother or look both ways before you cross the street. The pretense that there's a method to the madness is what I take issue with.

Then again, I think god is Santa Claus for adults. What the fuck do I know.

I like the ideas and the imagery. I collect old books and pictures of about it. I use themes from it in my artwork. But I stopped believing in it quite a few years ago. My mom and quite a few of my friends are still into it, so I kind of nod and smile. The history of it is very interesting though.

Nothing in the solar system is light years away ;)

Of course, many people make that mistake for many things, even trying to use "light years" as a form of time instead of distance. It's still only a year long :P

48. Light years aren't used as measurement?
That's what it says right there on Wiktionary:

(astronomy) A unit of length (abbreviation ly) equal to the distance light travels in one year; used to measure extremely large distances.

Sounds like a long measurement to me. I used it in that sense.

53. Yes, it is used as a distance, only.
The solar system is not even a single light year across from one side of Pluto's orbit to the other. Astrology doesn't consider the Oort cloud, other than the occasional major comet. Some of the major asteroids are now being used as I understand it, though I don't know anything more beyond that.

Now if you had said "light days" that would have been an acceptible distance :)

68. I really "believe" that you should read ALL of my words before asking your questions
;)

Did I not state in the subject of my previous post that the term "light year" is indeed a measurement of distance, only?
Perhaps I should restate it: The term "light year" is only ever used to measure astronomical distances, and no planet within the Solar System is anywhere near approaching a full light year away.

Now, for further clarity of the words posted in this subthread, from WritingIsMyReligion's post starting it (if you do not mind me quoting it, WritingIsMyReligion, that is :))

"The very concept is beyond absurd---planets and stars, light years away, somehow impacting my life?"

Now then, as I know the bare minium about astrology and probably far more about astronomy, what I do know is that it is a misnomer that planets and stars literally "light years" away have anything to do with astrology as normally practiced on our fair planet. Thus my contention that one should know a little about the subject to be dissed when making such a statement.

Your post about the distance of Terra to Sol as being a phenomenally small light-year distance is, in fact, correct, as it is a true measure of the distance by the amount of time it takes light to travel along that line.

Perhaps you were confused because I pointed out that too many people make the mistake as well of using a "light year" as a measure of time, when a "light year" will always only ever be a year long in time ;)

However, I do fully know and realize that if anyone around here ever professes an interest in any of the not-so-accepted "arts" of this fine world then it is automatically assumed that person is also less educated and/or less intelligent.

Does that clarify the words posted in the above subthread adequately enough? :P

No, but I do think that gazing at stars during the twilight hours of an early Texas summer evening is one of the most beautiful things imaginable.

One of my close pals is into astrology, another pal is an actual astronomer-- I try never to go out with both of them at the same time as they argue too much (science v religion and its concomitant ugliness) which tends to diminish the actual beauty going on around me. <sigh>

But individually, they are both really cool to listen to when stargazing-- I get lots and lots of different perspectives, stories and gems of knowledge from both of them.

it turns out to be a really bad day upon which I say something like, "I shouda known 'cause the horoscope said it."

So, while NOT believing in it, why would I get very upset with a certain newspaper astrologer who seems to have a vendetta against Pisces. This would be one Jacqueline BIGAR, who puts up to 5 stars per sign per day, 5 being best, and hardly any of the signs get the dreaded ONE star except Pisces, rather frequently!1

But other than that, no, I don't believe in it!1

69. Not in the least
But then we Pisces tend to be skeptics, so it's not surprising.

73. Unlike 85% of the people (so far)...
I have actually studied astrology. I do not consider the subject a system that one "believes" in. It isn't a religion, that says you will go to hell if you don't follow these rules. It is something that I use, mostly for the psychological insights I can get from it. If you don't want to study astrology, fine. BTW, my degree is in chemistry. I don't "believe" in chemistry, either.

78. I am familiar with the "study" of astrology
having grown up around some who did it. And yes, its like a religion as it is faith based as there is NO scientific basis for it. None. Buddism is a religion too that also doesn't say you will go to hell either. Something can be psuedoscience without being "a religion" btw. Astrology=pseudoscience...Astronomy=science. To say anything else is not rational. Astrology IS faith based. Whatever your degree is in, does not change the rules of nature btw. Does saying I have a degree in zoology mean I can declare there is no god because I believe it is so,make it so? Of course not. Thats MY personal belief.

80. That's funny.
The anecdotal evidence you base your belief on is the exact opposite of the scientific method.

81. of course it is.
Thats the point I'm making here. Astrology is based on anecdoctal evidence. Unless you think Reagan predicted the fall of the Berlin wall because his Astrologer told him the moon was in Aquarius?

86. A small point: Buddhism is technically a philosophical/ethical path
That can or cannot also be your religion.

But, I agree with everything else!
