I just recieved the movie "W" from Netflix in the mail. Now,
is this movie going to give me the stupids, or a brain freeze?

Do I need to keep a puke basket handy?

2. I liked it as a movie. I didn't like it as a "bio" of Bush.
I think it's a well made movie, with good acting and directing. The script is interesting, in part because of the classic, almost mythical, personal relationships in the film, but also because of the discussions of war and American foreign policy.

The film takes a view of Bush that I don't think agrees with the facts. It doesn't praise him, and it does show him as mistaken and flawed, so it's certainly not a pro-Bush piece. But it shows him more in control than I think he was, and it shows him as misled on events where I believe he was the misleader, so to speak.

As film-making, it is exceptional. There's one scene of a fight between Bush and Daddy where I found myself feeling sorry for both of them, until I shook my head and remembered I hated both of them. :) There's also one fascinating dream sequence where Stone turns most of the movie on its head, or at least portrays W and Daddy differently than in the rest. Classic Stone.

Anyway, I really liked the film, but I took it as fiction, and had to not see it as a bio of Bush. It was almost more of a classic Greek tragedy, complete with destructive hubris.

One scene still cracks me up. Watch for when Bush is leading his advisors on a dirt path on his "ranch--" it's symbolism is hilarious.

Anyway, my opinion. I liked the movie, even if I thought it was too easy on Bush.

3. Its not one of Oliver Stone's best.. not by a long shot. But Ellen Burstyn and James Cromwell

as Bar and Poppy are splendid. And, Elizabeth Banks seems too "clear- headed" as Laura. Josh Brolin is well cast and does a good impression of dubya. I thought Stone's "Nixon" in 1994 was waaay better.

6. I am still disturbed by the fact that
I kept looking at "Laura Bush" and wanting her, in that way. :scared:

Banks was very good in that role. Whether that's really Laura or not, she played a very believable character with interesting nuances. Essentially, she disagreed with Bush politically but loved him personally, and Banks actually pulled that off, never looking too soft, but never looking weak, either. She and Cromwell gave the best performances, I thought. Dreyfus was good, but mostly impersonated Cheney. Brolin was excellent at portraying Bush, and managed some nuances in a character with few nuances--the scene when Daddy lost the election was brilliantly done. But I thought Cromwell and Banks were the best.

4. Richard Dryfess as Cheney was great, imo
I thought it was well worth watching, but it was in general just ok.
