Now that I've pinpointed the towns my ancestors came from,

I'm thinking of going to Scotland. I have some savings, and could do this before too long, I think.

The funny thing is that I've thought I couldn't afford such a trip. Then I discovered places I really want to visit, and started doing the math. Just a bit more into my savings account, and I could do this.

Yep, I want to go to Scotland.

2. Good idea!
I'll tell the travel agent I want to see Iona, Jedburgh Abbey, and any place they make scotch! That should make planning easy! :toast:

3. If resources allow, try to visit the Hebrides
If you're lucky, you'll see the sun break through the rolling rain clouds and light that beautiful bleak land and seascape. Unforgettable.

4. I'll see what I can do. First priority is visiting the Borderlands,
which are the ancestral lands. But if I can get to other areas, I will.

6. Yeah, it is fortunate that they come from a place that speaks
English, albeit with a cool accent. Still don't know precisely where my German relatives came from, so hard to say whether I'll feel as enthused about going to a place whose language I don't speak.

7. LOTS of Germans speak English
in fact most of the rest of the world takes learning other languages seriously. Besides that, language is a really poor reason to avoid going somewhere!

8. Scotland is lovely,
the Scots are great! We were lucky to go (some years ago) when Scotland Air (?) existed; cheap! They only had one plane, and when tire blew we waited at Newark for replacement tire to arrive in Scotland, etc etc. BUT lovely trip! More rainbows than I've EVER seen!

10. I did the ancestral lands on a bike.
Edited on Fri Apr-03-09 10:11 AM by bikebloke
And it was a lucky summer for biking. A drought year. I had about 10 minutes of rain during my ride. The rest fell at night, while I slept in my tent. My only regret is wasting time at a tribal gathering, when I could have ridden further north to the top.
