Good for Iowa. I mean Iowa isn't exacly Alabama or Utah but their democrats tend to be on the conservative side and they voted for Bush in 2000 & 2004.

If Iowa can allow gays to have the same rights and straight couples then :wtf: is wrong with the rest of the country??!!

1. As happy as I am about this
I have a feeling the Mormons are shining up their combat boots, as we speak. After seeing what they did to California it's hard to be optimistic.

It's still a victory. I hope it lasts.

4. And I'm shining up my vegan electric-blue size-12 asskickers as we speak.

Where they want to stir shit up, we'll (we=liberals.) meet them. I hear Iowa's pretty, that's their mistake...they should try that crap someplace dirty and soiled like NYC.

8. Where did you get those?
I want a pair! They're gorgeous! Do they come in size 10 ladies? Or 8 in guys?

17. MooShoes.
$159.00

They're listed under unisex and they run a mite large. You'd want something around a UK unisex size-8 (that's like US women's 10, men's 9).

2. We are a lot more progressive
than most of the country thinks we are. We sent Obama on his way after all.

5. Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota are the very heart of some of the most
progressive movements in US history. We simply believe in equality and fairness for the most part. Everybody pulls their weight.
Do the names Henry Wallace, Hubert Humphrey or Bob LaFollete ring a bell?
Just because an occasional Steve King or Michelle Bachman sneaks in, we really are a people willing to give people an even break.

16. THIS ^
Iowa has plenty of progressive politicians and a strong liberal tradition-- moreso than some traditional so-called "blue states".

6. It's awesome. But as Mrs. V. pointed out to me,
it won't be long until the homophobe fundies launch their campaign to amend the Iowa constitution to ban this form of equality.

7. Iowa's constitution is not easily amended IIRC
Edited on Fri Apr-03-09 10:21 AM by rurallib
From the DM Register:
=====================================================
Q. What is the process for an amendment to the Iowa Constitution?

A. Amendments need to be approved by simple majorities in both the House and Senate in two consecutive general assemblies, then must be approved by a simple majority of voters in the next general election. Each general assembly lasts for two years. This year is the second year of the current general assembly. That means if an amendment is approved this year and in the 2009 or 2010 legislative session, it can be on the general election ballot in November 2010. If lawmakers wait until 2009 to start the amendment process, the earliest that a proposed amendment could reach voters is November 2012.
===============================================================
Since Dems are solidly in charge of both houses, an amendment will probably not even see the light of day. I believe the House is 56-44 Dem and the Senate is 30 - 20 Dems. I am fairly sure that both leaders have expressed no desire to introduce such an amendment.

The fundies are salivating over the prospects of getting an amendment on the ballot in 2012. Talk about a way to jack Iowa squarely into the Red.

Although, the fundies here in Wisconsin tried to do the same thing in 2006. The amendment passed, but Dems still made big gains.

there is any hurry to bring it up in either house either this year or next.
ETA - here is a link to a joint comminique by the speaker of the House and the majority leader in the senate:

11. Honestly - any super true blue state should hold their heads in shame
I mean the Pacific Coast states along with everything from Maryland up to Maine should already have this passed and done. These are the hardcore solid blue states - the scourge of Red States everywhere.

Iowa, at least to me, I consider a 'purple' state because it can go either way.

Hard to believe our slightly slow-witted southern neighbors did this. Nice work, Iowa!

15. Ahem, HEAR THAT CALIFORNIA?
IOWA is on the right side of civil rights and California is not. I shall no longer give California the distinction of being the place I wanted to move.

I shall move to Iowa, grow corn, and moonshine, make methanol, marry the woman of my dreams, and live happily ever after. Fuck you, California.

My ass is about to get chewed like it's never been chewed before.

:hide:

No, seriously, GOOD FOR IOWA!
