Freepers are hysterical. Good gawd, marriage is doomed!

I'm ornery. I've announced that I feel free to fuck small animals in Iowa now.

1. No offense, but the screwing animals thing is something that anti-gay forces use
against us. Now that gay marriage is legal, anything goes they say.

Please, don't use their rhetoric, even if you meant to be funny, as your rolfs seem to show, it's disgusting.

3. I know. Believe me, I do.
I just won't tolerate such stupidity. Anyone with half a brain knows that is ridiculous. I don't consider that MY problem, an whoever gets freaked out can wallow in their own stupid. And then kiss my butt.

I apologize if you found offense. I have to resort to humor, else I couldn't survive.

5. Iowa has a very tough procedure for that...
in brief, there is basically no way to get it on the ballot without a vote by two different (two-year) sessions of the legislature...the Democratically-dominated legislature that has said they won't allow any such motion to come to a vote. (There is no referendum by petition.) Even if they did get the vote...the first chance for a ballot-initiative to reach the people would be something like 2012.

(I was reading about this yesterday. IA has an iron-clad procedure. If the freeps wanted to change the constitution to change the procedure...the procedure for constitutional change is the same.)

8. Ummmm...try 2014.
"Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal, a Democrat, said state lawmakers were unlikely to consider gay marriage legislation in this legislative session, which is expected to end within weeks.

Gronstal also said he's "not inclined" to propose a constitutional amendment during next year's session. Without a vote by the Legislature this year or next, the soonest gay marriage could be repealed would be 2014. "

11. And by that time, people will have seen that the world didn't
collapse with marriage equality. Iowans have common sense. Once they see this isn't a bad thing, they'll let it stand.

23. Actually we did some numbers and there seems to be little chance
that repugs could take over the Senate in 2010, so Gronstal will be majority leader until at least 2012. This means he will stop any move in the senate until 2013.
Ergo it won't be at least until 2013 that repugs could be in charge of the senate which means 2013 first passage, 2015 second passage 2016 general election vote.
So we are looking at nearly 8 years before anything can happen.
BTW repugs tried to run on this last election (remember Hansen ruled in July last year) and it didn't do them much good.
But it will get fanned a lot. This will now be their cash cow in Iowa.

10. Iowa doesn't have California's crazy referendum policy.
You can't just put a Constitutional amendment on a ballot and put it up to a popular vote. There's an actual process in Iowa, and it will take much more time than it did in California.

It's going to be around for a while.

14. Not likely for a while...
Iowa has the same process to get amendments on the ballot that Massachusetts does. The proposed amendment has to pass both houses of the state legislature in two consecutive sessions (read: years) before it can even be put up for a popular vote.

Also, at this time both houses of their legislature are firmly in Demopcratic control--with state legislative elections not held again until November 2010--so the likelihood of an amendment getting out of committee in the near future is somewhere between slim and none.

The fact that this was a UNANIMOUS decision made by jurists who were primarily appointed by Republican governers also speaks volumes.

Don't expect the current legislature in Iowa to bring up an anti-equality amendment in this session.

37. Taint Likely
From a practical sense, the earliest it would be on the ballot (if at all) would be 2012. It's already failed once and that was before the tide of public opinion started swinging the other way (no pun intended). Social conservatives are becoming more and more marginalized every day. Businesses and individuals who bankroll any amendment initiatives will be identified and boycotted and they now know this.

Sorry to disappoint you, but it's very unlikely your prediction will come true.

45. I don't exactly live on DU, Lil Missy
Edited on Sat Apr-04-09 06:51 PM by Bucky
But I notice that you've responded to this subthread with increasing snarkiness, making it quite clear--based on nothing except my skepticism that a majority of Iowans will prove more liberal than a majority of Californians--that you've decided I'm against gay marriage.

I must report that your skills at emotional projection exceed your skills at reading my mind. Nothing would make me happier if we, as a country, could get beyond the whole business of minding other peoples' personal business, including who they marry. I doubt it'll happen, but it would be a refreshing development. But my experience is that far too many people are too narrow minded and assholish--and I say this with reference to people opposing marriage equality, not with regard to you acting like an asshole on DU. Opposing marriage equality is far worse than the casual sticking one's nose into someone else's business when a total stranger decides to tell me what I think. That's just briefly annoying.

You managed to completely dismiss your own snarky comment, blame it on me, and call me an asshole in one felled swoop.

If I misunderstood your original comment, then I'll apologize. But I guess it rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. So, mind your own advice, and don't project it all onto ME.

Sorry if I offend you. I'm queer, and here. And not going to go away.

I'll not mind your business. Don't you mind mine either, kay?

People like him would give any state a bad name. And like NNNS said down thread Iowa is much more diverse than many realize. Friday's vote is just one indication of that.

13. It's no big deal. I've been fucking small animals in Iowa since the mid-80s
And down there, it's never been a problem.

No seriously, Iowa is a lot cooler than people give it credit for. It's a fairly enlightened state in many ways-- much to the surprise of many on the coasts, who seem to think that flyover country is inhabited by rubes.

==============================

And now, the obligatory Iowa joke:

Do you know why the Mississippi River flows south, instead of north? Because IOWA SUCKS!
