Poll question: Which of these music styles do you like the most?
Edited on Sun Apr-05-09 11:45 AM by mvd
I didn't put "favorite style," since there are never enough options. I'm voting for "classic rock/guitar pop/singer songwriter." Anything from The Beatles to Simon And Garfunkel to The Corrs to A Fine Frenzy to Cheap Trick to The Cars to Bruce Springsteen to U2 to R.E.M. to Metric's outstanding new CD.

1. That wasn't fair
I love Classic Rock as much as 90s rock but I voted for rock 80s to now because of the "grunge" era.

2. I would probably make the same decision
I love Pearl Jam and STP, but they lean towards the poppier side of grunge.

I love folk, but that could be included in singer/songwriter.

14. You bet; seen them a few times too, including a New Years Eve show
at the beautiful Pantages theater on Hollywood Blvd with The Blasters ( about '91) . The full contingent for the Blasters too, Gene Taylor on piano, and both the late great Lee Allen as well as Steve Berlin( played with both bands that night) on sax.

17. My choice is pretty clear, but I could find good examples in all of those.
And actually, as much as I love punk, since the late 80's it really only accounts for about 10% of what I listen to, if that, though lately I've stumbled upon a few bands that I hadn't heard before.

Over the last two years it's Black Metal that accounts for the biggest chunk of what I listen to, but even that doesn't add up to much. I'm all over the map from day to day. I even left an opera on tv the other night. :)

18. Hi, Forkboy
Do you like Mastodon? Or do you like darker metal than that?

You helped me to nail my music taste: I enjoy lots of styles but like non-generic pop, classic rock, singer/songwriter including folk the most. :hi:

19. I'm grappling with the new Mastodon CD.
Edited on Sun Apr-05-09 04:18 PM by Forkboy
Not sure what to make of it yet. I really loved their first one, kind of liked the 2nd one, loved the 3rd one, and have no idea what to think on this new one yet.

Black Metal is much darker and usually rather abrasive, (though there are a ton of ambient black metal bands out there that are actually fairly mellow, though not neccesarily pleasant), almost a sort of proto-thrash with a real lo-fi production and harsh vocals . To give you an idea of the darkness of some BM, there's actually a sub-genre of it that's been coined "depressive/suicidal" BM.

Here's a few examples. You don't have to listen to the whole songs. Just giving you taste of the some of the variations within the genre.

The ambient kind

The Axis Of Perdition - The Elevator Beneath The Valve
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pee-_YB-f_s

The suicidal variety

Xasthur (pronounced Za-Sir) - Screaming At Forgotten Fears
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YedXRq3Pbo&feature=related

Here's the Up With People type lyrics..
A sinister telepathy is screaming at forgotten fears
An exit made of your self-destruction, may your reflection guide the blade.
In your lost code of self knowledge, a mere entrance for evil to enter
The venom is hidden and the venom wears a mask (I serve myself upon the wings
of pains affliction, unto thee). Disconnect from my state of being (and
without a trace) it was my soul that murdered yours.

the blistering kind

Craft - Fuck The Universe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_p1WBk9y6c

And lastly, the "all over the place" variety

Deathspell Omega - A Chore For The Lost (it took me forever to get into these guys. It's seems like pure chaos at times, but repeated listens reveals something new each time. Now I think they're best example of the genre. They pack so many things into each song, and I love how the various instruments almost seem to weave in and out at times. An incredibly hard listen at first, but very rewarding, at least to crazies like me)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAGGFaogNVs

Like I say, don't bother listening to the whole songs (unless you somehow end up liking it, of course. Good luck on that. ;) ).

I'll take a listen - even if I don't like, it's good to be more musically knowledgable since music is one of my big interests. It also helps if I want to be a critic. I don't mind Mastodon if I'm in a certain mood. :hi:

But maybe I'll pass on the new Mastodon since I'm not a fan and you are torn on it.

25. Actually, I'm torn on it because it's a little more radio friendly.
Not to make it sound like it's mainstream or anything, but the vocals are far more melodic overall than ever before, and it has a grunge tinge throughout (it was produced by Brenden O'Brien who did Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen). It's not as aggressive as the last one at all, though it still has it's moments for sure.

All the reviews that I've seen so far for it have been totally positive. I don't dislike it, and it's definitely not a bad CD at all, I'm just still coming to terms with it.

Here's a review that sums it up pretty well.

26. R.E.M, Bruce, and U2 are rock 80s-now
Edited on Sun Apr-05-09 07:32 PM by mvd
But they also are guitar pop in a way. I was just saying what each in the classic rock/guitar pop/singer songwriter could include. But if you like just that style, rock 80s-now would be a better pick. Personally, I ruled the rock 80s-now option out due to a lot of new rock.

29. all and more
can't pick favorites anymore, the one thing I HATE is too much repetition of anything. I would strongly add different world music to the list, as well. I have an affinity for Nortena y old ranchera type Mexican music and just about anything with strings from the m\Middle East.

Again, the point of the poll isn't to have all genres in the same choice the same. I put standards/big band anb jazz together because they've been around so long and have some similar roots.

33. It depends on the band/artist, not the genre
I play everything (and I mean everything) on my show and when I'm relaxing; genre has little to do w/ whether a band/artist is interesting to me, and whether the musicgives me an emotional connection.
