I have had 14 beers tonight....and still no cigarettes
and I am really craving one right now, so someone please talk me out of it. By the way, I DO have a back-up pack in my living room in case I break down and can't handle it anymore.

It has been 12 days with no smokes for me, so far....I'm afraid I will fail this attempt at quitting

3. I'm doing the best I can now...it's mostly habit
if I have a beer, I want a cigarette following immediately....

How was your online date with Grizzly Adams?

2. Beer is the devil when it comes to trying to stay away from cigs!!
You'll be pissed at yourself tomorrow! DON'T DO IT! And it is likely not going to be as good as it sounds!

5. Ha! Yes, I was a smoker. I quit once for 6 months but BEER
helped me start back. I quit again when I got pregnant. It was soooo easy to quit that time. One, I knew I HAD to. There was no other option. Then I got so sick that a cig was the nastiest thing I could think of.

Thanks, she is a doll, huh? :)

7. Ummm....I left out coffee
coffee, too makes me want to have a cigarette and that is bad enough. I get my coffee ( right across the street ) I walk to my job ( one block from where I live ) I smoke....jeez Shell...I don't know if I can really do this right now

10. Coffee, after eating, riding in a car.....
So many things make you want to smoke. You can do it. It is one of the hardest things ever. Getting pregnant may have been the only thing that would have made me quit.

Just don't do it. Don't talk yourself into it being ok. You will be so mad at yourself afterwards. And you will think it wasn't worht it.

19. Problem is, I've been mad at myself plenty of times when I found the window
where I could quit....you know how it is. You wake up in the morning, cigarette......so you go without that cigarette and then you get coffee across the street ( cigarette craving again ). Then, after work you go for some beers ( I'm glad these restaurants went smoke free, btw...I have to step outside to have one ) although it is no hardship there, either.

6. Don't give in.
I've been there. Well, the cigarette part, not the 14 beers part.

It'll sound weird but the thing that finally worked for me for those pesky cravings was......sunflower seeds.

11. Funny you say that...yes indeed and that is very weird!
I have eaten sunflower and pumpkin seeds when I get a craving for cigarettes and I have found that it takes away the craving; only problem with that is if I were to eat sunflower and pumpkin seeds every time I craved a cigarette I would probably weigh about 500 lbs.

8. Flush that backup pack!
Edited on Sun Apr-05-09 08:36 PM by Richard Steele
If you've gone this long without one,
than you can go FOREVER without one.
You are WAY past the point of no return-
you're a SUCCESSFUL NON-SMOKER!

Get rid of that backup pack ASAP.
It's like the phone number for someone you were in a TOXIC relationship with:
You don't need it anymore,
and nothing good can come from keeping it on SpeedDial...

The only purpose it currently serves in your life is to make it EASY
to make a horrible mistake in a moment of weakness.
You don't need that.
No one needs that.
So get rid of it already.

BTW: Congrats on quitting!

12. Don't congratulate me yet, please...this isn't the first time I said I would quit
and went back to it. The last time I quit, I was getting the shakes and getting very tense at times...I also found I was snapping at people who didn't deserve to be snapped at, so I just said fuck it..that shit is not worth it so I went back.

Yes..my fingers are actually trembling now

25. I know- I've tried to quit many times.
Edited on Sun Apr-05-09 09:19 PM by Richard Steele
But if you've gone 14 days, you aren't just "Trying" anymore,
you've actually DONE it.

You need to keep reminding yourself that YOU'VE DONE IT,
because you really HAVE!

Sure, the withdrawl symptoms will stick around for awhile,
and the occasional cravings will pop up for as long as you live.

But 14 days is about 13 1/2 days longer than most of us make it without a smoke.

If you've made it 14 days, then you can make it 14 weeks,
and then 14 years.

If you've made it 14 days, you've defeated the habit;
you've broken the chemical cycle of physical addiction.
It's just the MENTAL habits that are nagging at you now.

You beat the nicotine-monkey that was on your back;
you kicked that monkey's ASS!
Be proud of that- it's not an easy thing to do.

That monkey is gonna come around knocking at your door at odd hours
for a very long time to come. All you have to do is not let him in,
ever again. He's a very INSISTENT monkey, but he is NOT your friend,
and he never was. Try to keep that in mind when he comes knocking.

You rock.

32. Wow....thank you for that- I'm at a loss for words
I'm not sure what else to say except thank you for that post....because everything makes perfect sense in it, and everything you stated is absolute truth. The mental part, well...I suppose it is I who have to get rid of that monkey ( you use the monkey on the back reference...it fits here ). This is also coming from someone who chain-smokes....just imagine the impact here.

23. Keep fighting it!
You're doing the right thing (not smoking) and I remember how hard it was to not smoke after I had been drinking. Drink a big 'ol glass of water, take some vitamins, and hit the hay. You'll be proud of yourself tomorrow morning for not lighting up.

Good luck!

26. Good luck
the vitamins and water are more for hangover prevention. Based purely on the 14 beers, I would be loaded and have assured myself of a hangover the next day, but water, vitamins, etc. always help reduce it.

Main thing is to fight the urge to smoke. As some of the other folks said up above, that stuff is nasty and will make your hands stink too.

Good night!

35. Here's something that might help, if you have a strong anti-corporate stance.
Just stick with it. Quitting is the best way to stick it to the cigarette companies. Since the advent of the Surgeon General's warning, they have added as many as 2,500 chemicals to their tobacco to make it more addictive. So the difficulty in quitting is not your fault. But you can have your revenge by making the break permanent. B-)
