Photos of Nome, Alaska.
Edited on Mon Apr-06-09 12:30 AM by Blue_In_AK
My husband and I went to Nome for the finish of the Iditarod this year, my first time to western Arctic Alaska. Knowing some of you have issues with the race, I've put together some pictures just of Nome, what it looks like, with some beautiful sunsets, street scenes, craft fair, etc., if you want to check them out. It's a very different sort of place. Imagine the temperature at -15 to about 0, with winds up to about 15 mph.

(And if you are fans of the race, I have two galleries of pictures from the start in Anchorage/Willow and the finish in Nome under "Sports" at my website. I haven't captioned all of them in the second batch yet, but you can probably figure out what's going on.)

1. Great photos!
What sort of building was the stained glass on?

I would totally move to Alaska, but as a lifelong Californian, I don't do cold very well. :(

6. I'm not sure
what that building was, to tell you the truth. We were just walking around town the evening before we came back to Anchorage, and it caught my eye in the evening sun.

2. My dear Blue!
What wonderful pics!

Listen, I covet one of those hats! How would I go about getting one? There's a certain style I have in mind...

Can you put me in touch with the lady in the pic?

Really, the pics are fantastic, and well worth the time I took to look at them.

Thank you so much, sweetie!

7. Fabulous photos!
I've wondered what the remote areas of Alaska are like, and you captured it very, very well. I feel like I got a real sense of the area — perhaps too much; I'm feeling a bit agoraphobic from seeing those hundreds of miles of nothin' but white. :D

Oh — the frost on the hotel window. Fantastic! :wow:

Another very remote town: Chicken, Alaska.

The Taylor Highway is one of the three "highways" in Alaska that I haven't yet traveled. The other two are the Elliott going from Fairbanks to Manley Hot Springs and the Haul Road up to Prudhoe. Those are adventures for another day. :)

ed. That's a very funny website. Typical Alaskans....

9. These photos are fantastic!!
You should send them to the Alaska tourism board or whoever because they really make me want to go there. I don't think I could live somewhere as remote as Nome, but I am very much in favor of the whole "getting away from it all" vacation plan. Someday I'd really love to do an Alaska vacation, but only if I have enough time to enjoy it properly.

Sheesh, Nome is 3300 miles from Chicago?
