most of my circle are native born SF'ers or Bay Area'ens and they are completely lazy about pronouncing names.

San Jose is Sanozee' for example.

"Don't say Frisco and don't say San-Fran-Cis-Co. That's the way Easterners, like Larry King, pronounce it. It's more like SanfrnSISco, all one word minus a syllable."

The (r) is optional, depending on how fast you're talking.

Or we just say "Frisco."

there was a time when it was really frowned on but then sometime during the 90's I think Herb Caen said it was now okay to call it that (because some locals started adopting it).

39. Actually, we just say "The City" cuz there's only one.
I remember reading in Herb Caen a few years ago that some poor guy from Chicago was staying at a hotel near Oakland Airport, and asked the woman at the front desk for a map of the city, and she gave him a map of SF. When he complained he wanted a map of Oakland, she just looked totally confused. "But you asked for a map of 'The City'".

Not too much arrogance there, eh?

43. I actually had it say it out loud a few times...
and yes, I do pronounce it that way. :D I really hadn't noticed before. Mom does too. There are some oldtimers who say it a bit differently -- mostly those who are second generation from the old country -- kind of with a "samp" sound to it.

"Frisco" is like nails on the chalkboards from me, unless it is being said by a longshoreman oldtimer (preferable from the east coast) who used to work the piers -- the I love it.

same goes for "Sanozay" as one local poster pointed out!
