88. Oban
ferry to Mull.

Or the way I ended up going.... Oban --> Corran --> Lochaline --> Fishnish

I remember why I had to stop in Crianlarich -- I wasn't used to driving on the left side and hit a curb. I had a flat and stopped at a pub. The bartender changed my tire and made me a great sandwich. Boot? Bonnet?

And yea Ward is a W-I-E-R-D place.

Or to be more specific, we lived on hwy 7 about 7 or 8 miles west of Allenspark in the Tahosa Valley. Loved that place.

On the peak to peak hwy there use to be, maybe it's still there, just south of Ward a few miles a great little locals bar... in the middle of freaking nowhere. Had some fun times there.

366. Dunno
I have never been there but many of the Ontarians of my acquaintance roll their eyes upward with the mention of Wawa and talk hitchhiking horror stories. I knew a lot of hippies and I'm sure they made the *best* of the lost time. Could be they just forgot to leave after a day or two.

Okeechobee was so small we didn't even have a McDonalds. We had to drive 30 miles to Ft. Pierce when we wanted a Big Mac! I actually went back in 2007 to meet up with one of my teachers from 30 years ago. I didn't see anyone else that I knew and I couldn't even find the house I used to live in!

I grew up in Bartow so we'd just take 60 east and there we were.

Okeechobee - my parents almost bought a chicken farm somewhere near there. We drove down to check it out. None of us were impressed so they didn't get into the chicken business. Thank whatever powers there might be!

I've been thru Yeehaw going from Tampa to Delray to see the FIL.
First time I was there, though, was in the 70's and taking a couple of MG gear boxes down to the driving school at the track in Jupiter where the at-the-time BF was helping someone get some race training, but had encountered a problem. It was about 10 at night and I got mixed up getting on the turnpike and headed north. Found one of those turnarounds only the FHP is "supposed" to use and got myself going in the right direction.

If you ever go through again, stop by Rainbow Pool, the swimming hole. It's fantastic. Find a local, ask them where it is, you really can't miss it. You can swim in behind the waterfall. Pretty neat.

One of those strange little old New England villages, emphasis on little. (0.11 sq. mi, 4 streets, no municipal government, governed and municipal services by the city of New Britain, pop. >50. It has a post office though.)

I actually know for a fact that at least 3 other DUers have been there as it is impossible to get to Hartford, CT on I-84 East or Rt. 4 East without driving through Oakland Gardens. Not one of those DUers can find it on a map without cheating though. I'd put $20 on that.

Maybe we should not spread the word and keep this to ourselves. I hope to go back someday and don't want to find a thing changed.

Anyone actually been there? When I went back in the late 70s I think it had like 9 people and a gopher. There were lots of really old houses up on the hillsides which looked abandoned but may not have been.

US 101. The freeway was never built so 4th and 5th streets are one-way US 101 through town.

Eureka is county seat of Humboldt county.

I was born in a hospital in Eureka many years ago which was demolished soon after and replaced(old vs "new" Saint Josephs.

Bonus Point: What was the original name of Stantons?

329. Been there literally hundreds of times.
Lived in Ashland for a while. Drove through Phoenix every day on my way to and from work. Stopped there from time to time to get a milkshake at the Jack-in-the-Box, took my dog there to stay with a coworker while I was going to be out of town for a while.

Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 01:25 PM by doc03
I don't remember it being called the Pond Barracks. I have an Amberg city map and it is called Ritter Von Mohl Kaserne, the Rads called it the Kaserne. I was in Troop K, 3rd Squadron, 2nd Armored Cavalry, I haven't typed that in a lot of years. I was there from February 1969 to March 1970. The barracks surrounded a rectangular parade field. I believe there were either 2 or 3 buildings on each side of the parade ground and one on each end. The building on the entrance end was the chow hall. Troop K was in the first building on the left side, I think, we had the bottom 2 floors, the top floor was a missle squadron. I think How Battery was in the third building on the left or the end opposite to the chow hall. I'm not sure that was 40 years ago, I would sure like to go back and see what it looks like today. The old town part of Amberg was really neat it was surrounded by a wall and had big stone entrances like a castle and narrow cobblestone streets. There was a German barracks near downtown called the Kaiser Wilhelm Kaserne. When I arrived in Amberg I went straight to Grafenvier, what a mud hole that was in February, I also went to Hohenfels later. We spent 3 tours on the Chec border

Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 11:36 PM by Adsos Letter
yup, as you looked from the Mess hall towards the EM Club at the other end, How Btry barracks was in the third building on the left.

They decided to finally remodel those old barracks about 1/2 way through my tour, so we spent 8 months in the one storey, open bay, garage-type barracks at Vilseck. I spent many, many hours out on the tank trails at Graf, in every type of weather you can think of.
And, when they moved me into an FO slot, I ended up helping direct fire for the various arty units that rotated through Graf for their periodic live-fire deployments...which meant many, many nights and days out on the bunker line directing everything from 120mm mortars to 175mm field guns. Our battery was 155mm, M109-A1's, the first issue of the long tubed M109 series of tracks.

Initially, as a gun bunny, I didn't have to rotate through border patrol at May or Rotz, but when I was moved into FO slot I did do one deployment with the Sheridans at the border. Other than that; 2 REFORGER Deployments, and tons of time at Graf...and I hated my time in the military also (for the most part; there were some cool times, and some good times, but, overall...not so much).

Here are the only photos I have scanned into the computer from that time, although I have a lot more in boxes. I suspect you will recognize the scenery: :D

MAIN GATE INTO OLD AMBERG

LOOKING TOWARDS THE MESS HALL FROM HOW BTRY.

THE VILS RIVER

YOURS TRULY< ATOP OUR GUN, "HENRY'S HEROES."

It has, indeed, been a long, long, time...they tell me you can zip right across the border now; quite a change from back in the day..."Toujours Pret," man... :patriot:

Though Two Egg is much farther off the beaten path than Gretna.

Looking at Google Maps - from the street view of Two Egg it looks like the other store closed. But Gretna, well it must have been Saturday and everybody in the area was at the 7-11 store! I've never seen that many vehicles at one time in Gretna as are in that street view!

Plus, add to that the joggers attacked by mountain lions, the exploding meth labs, and it's no wonder it was not an easy place to grow up in.

435. I am a Hoopa Valley HS graduate
Hoopa is on the Trinity River not the Mad River and is a relative metropolis locally.

Nearby towns at ends of roads: Hyampom, Pecwan, and Denny

Townsites within the Trinity Alps Wilderness area that had stores and were served on regular mule packroutes 150 years ago: White Rock, Old Denny, Marysville, Red Cap Central

not just in the reddest county in Texas, but the entire country.
So red, it makes national news.

I actually know some of the people in the article.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122671283257730271.html?mod=rss_Politics_And_Policy
(look at the slide show)

"Mary Jane Lofland, a Perryton native who runs the Freedom Express bail-bond service, wonders if a sense of waning power could explain why people seem so offended when they find out she's a Democrat. Last year, Ms. Lofland became the local Democratic Party's first chairman since 2000 and has tried to raise its profile."
Way to GO, Mary Jane!!!!!!

This place used to be solid Blue, I don't know what happened. It really benefited from Roosevelt's New Deal.
How easy people forget. The WPA, the rural electrification act, etc.

The mining town my mom was born in.
I may be cheating since it no longer exists.
It went poof after the mine closed down sometime in the late 1940's or early 1950's.

When we visited it was a giant dusty hole in the desert.
