But I have been pretty busy hiding about 1,000 baseball threads here in the Lounge in the past two days...

5. Godless pinkos.
Nationals fans, too, but they haven't seen any real baseball to know if they really like it or not.

12. Hey, the Nats are my favorite NL club
DC needed a team, and I love your new stadium. I got to see the Nats in their first season when they came to Arlington for an interleague game. I hope DC gets to experience some pennant fever some day. Unfortunately, it won't be this year. But sometimes good things take time (note, the Rays).

6. People who insist their sports be governed by a clock and fit within a perfect rectangle.
Edited on Tue Apr-07-09 01:49 PM by Tommy_Carcetti
Where the goal is to get the ball/playing item into opposing territory and to the end of the field/playing area.

Not saying there is any type of game that fits into that definition, because that sounds totally unique.

8. This guy I work with occasionally
he says it bores him. He's a huge football guy, though, and for whatever it's worth, he's from San Diego.

13. It doesn't exist to me
Once I stopped betting on baseball I'm amazed at how easily I ignore it. I don't watch a handful of pitches per year and never a full half inning. Late in the season I'll literally have no idea if a team is 20 games above or below .500.

Baseball's apologists are comically defensive. Seriously, why does a thread like this even exist? It's similar to Larry King exclaiming, "I'm bored by anyone who finds baseball boring." George Will has made somewhat similar remarks. Olbermann also. It's like they think anyone who isn't mystified by baseball simply doesn't understand it.

Everything happens smack in front of you. That's a huge reason for baseball's popularity. An old guy explained that to me in a Las Vegas sportsbook more than 20 years ago. "You think any of these guys know what's happening in football? I don't. But I can yell ball or strike." Immediately I realized how astute that was. Ask a fan to describe a given play in a football game and there's basically no chance he gets it right. There are simply too many variables away from the ball, collisions that impact how the play unfolds. It takes several replays to show them, often days later by Jaworski on specialized programs. In baseball you stare at two guys playing catch, both in exactly the same place every time, and once in a while there is a brief and minor departure from the simple game of catch. Sorry, but that's not fascinating or magical.

The lack of activity is the reason numbers are so huge in baseball. Think about that. Name any other sporting activity where digits are such a preoccupation. No one cares how many TD passes Joe Montana threw, or how many consecutive games Jim Brown gained at least 100 yards. No one knows how many bills FDR vetoed. Football is defined by the majesty on the field, the mental images. In baseball, numbers are a copout, a specific detail for fans to refer to and justify their level of attention. I work in stats. In other sports you have surreal departure from the norm, like Pittsburgh's defensive yards per pass attempt last season. But no one ever mentions them. The sports sells itself. I guarantee no one reading this thread is aware of how severely the Steelers departed from standard in that stat last season. In baseball, a similar number would have been touted on every pre and post game show and every message board.

That's my baseball opinion for the year. Thankfully I don't feel compelled to respond anymore, similar to the threads asserting golf is not a sport. Go ahead and be wrong.

14. I, for one...
Disclaimer: I'm from Italy and I didn't know much about baseball (if anything) until my move to the U.S., though my dad had played baseball in Italy (as an amateur).

I find baseball incredibly dull, long and boring. The MLB season is way too long, IMHO. I much prefer watching paint dry, or the clothes dryer or the hands of a clock. Perhaps, since I've lived most of my USA existence on Tobacco Road in North Carolina, where the local religion involves worship of college hoops (to which I subscribe), I just haven't had the exposure to it, though I did live 5 years in NYC and I did go to both Yankees and Mets games.

So sue me...
