"A Nightmare of the Suburbs"

I'll be in my own room, upstairs
the door locked, with a gun--
But nobody's coming
yet,

no black bodies
rising like night-flowers from your leafy summer streets,
no axe that splits
the drowsy thighbones of your window frame.

You look in your hand mirror--
They won't get in without a struggle!

But already the meager body
of the pistol begins to wake from his long sleep
of cardboard in the drawer of your bedside table.

Glowing blue-black,
now that he's here
only blood can appease him.

4. I struggle to stay timely. There are many poems I'd like to post that don't feel appropriate

given the climate of the day, and many others I'd like to include solely for their topicality that aren't really Lounge-worthy. I hate having to choose.
