I love Judas Priest. It hurts, but their time is gone. Who is the next Judas Priest?

Btw, I'm listening to Freewheel Burning as I type this.

I would love for a new JP album to once again chart a course for metal, but alas, it is not to be.

They once were ahead of the curve, and now, well, Nostrodamos, wtf?

Who is the next Priest?

3. The thing of it is, whoever tries to be the
next Judas Priest is going to fail at being the first "whatever the hell their band-name is." That said, the only newer (by my standards) metal band that's been consistently worth a shit is Disturbed. They can thrash when they want to, they can pull off ballad-ish stuff now and again.

4. I've gotta disagree with you on Nostradamus

I love it. The guitar work is fantastic throughout. Plus, I love the fact that they stopped worrying about trying to be as popular as Pyromania era Def Leppard and didn't even bother writing a single. To me, their biggest flaw was pulling short on their ambition; with this album they may have gone too far, but I'd rather aim high and miss than always aim low.

However, I think they really hit this one. Plus as a guitar nut, I love the fact that Glenn and KK have thrown a few nods to the old school (see KK's solo on Conquest and an outro lick on Alone--pretty reminscent of his classic whammy bar and wah wah work from the past.

And Future of Mankind.....wow. It's a pretty epic track, but it's pretty clear that KK has SERIOUSLY upped his game with this one. (The solo section goes: Both, Glenn, Both, KK) THat is just jaw dropping. I have always been a bit of a Downing partisan (the tremolo bar is just so GD fun when you are teenager!) and while he always throws a few gems in every album--sometimes stealing the show, on balance Glenn has always been the more consistent and versatile guitarist, I'd say they are about equal these days.

But like I said when the album first came out, if you like both Yes and Judas Priest, this is the album you've been waiting for, if however you are a normal person, well, maybe not so much.

7. They haven't worn real leather in decades

A few years ago PETA asked them to re-record Hell Bent for Leather as Hell Bent for Pleather--the band declined but did say that for washability reasons they haven't worn leather on stage in yeaaaarrrrrsssss.

8. There's a couple good new metal bands out there.
Mastodon springs immediately to mind. And Killswitch Engage ain't bad. A lot of folks seem to really dig Otep.

All that said, I can't say as metal is my favorite genre -- at least, not anymore -- and I'm not as informed on it as I am with many others.

9. Of the new bands I kind of dig Cresenct Shield
The production is pretty minimal, but it doesn't sound bad--I think they are a band worth keeping an eye (or ear) on.

10. Opeth is a great band.
You should give them a listen. They can be kind of death metal on some parts, but they are also considered progressive rock so many of their songs are haunting and beautiful along with being heavy and badass.
