45. My brother actually bought me a black wrist-band like the yellow one for Lance Armstrong
Edited on Wed Apr-08-09 09:23 PM by DS1
but it said RIP Dimebag Darrel (Getcha Pull) on it. I didn't think much of their later stuff, to be honest, but Cowboys from Hell, and Vulgar Display of Power are amazingly awesome. I liked Metallica's Black Album at the time, and immediately learned Enter Sandman on my electric guitar when it came out. It was easier to play than Rust in Peace. I even had a white Gibson Explorer like Hetfields for awhile, but then I traded it in for an Ibanez RG570.

However, when I was sent to Hawaii as my tour of duty, I pretty much stopped playing.

Funny story though, I got out of Combat Training (beyond bootcamp) just after Vulgar Display of Power came out, and was at the Charlotte NC airport waiting for my flight to Pendleton in CA when I saw that Vulgar was out. I bought a walkman, headphones, batteries, and it, and couldn't believe the awesomeness coming through my headphones :headbang: I can still remember the first few riffs of Mouth for War coming through the headphones and sitting back in a chair and thinking "Thank God I don't have to listen to that R&B shit anymore!"

Of course, previous to that, when I got out of bootcamp, I learned that this shit band called Nirvana had single-handedly killed off metal. Well, not all of it, but the bad parts. It was a trip to go from nothing but big hair metal on MTV to grunge in the span of 3 months.

edit: I've come to terms with Nirvana, but at the time I was thinking "WTF is this shit!" :)

Wow, apparently that Ibanez is now rare. I should sell it!

I didn't know you can handle an axe. Are you still playing now? My son started taking lessons, almost a year ago. I hear "Smoke on the Water" and a bit of "Freebird" every single day. :P

As for Nirvana....I admit, I've always liked them. Still do. If divulging this information places me on someone's DTM list, so be it. And oh - one more thing - I cried when Kurt died. :hide:

80. Hey, I've been meaning to ask you a question:
How does Slayer split up their guitar work? Back in the day I used to read Guitar Magazine and it seemed Kerry was really down on his own playing, and that Jeff Hanneman took most of the leads, but as a more casual listener these days I hear WAYYYY more about Kerry than Jeff--has Kerry steeped up? Or do they split it evenly and Kerry King is just a bit more "photogenic?"

93. They've always shared the load.
When you listen to them all Kerry's solos are on the right speaker and Jeff's are on the left except on "Divine Intervention" where it's reversed. They trade back and forth pretty much evenly throughout the catalog.

As far as media, Kerry does most of the interviews and generally is the face of the band. Slayer is essentially Jeff's band but he doesn't like the spotlight. He prefers to just play.

As far as skill, Jeff has always been the better technical player but Kerry is damn close. He even went back for lessons before the recording of "Seasons".

101. Cool, thanks for that!
I think you are pretty well aware that I feel about Priest the same way you feel about Slayer--I have always preferred two lead guitar bands; no matter how good one guy is, the solos tend to sound alike when they don't have a foil to play against.

With Priest you can get the impression that they split it up 50/50, but that just isn't the case--I'd say it is more of a 70/30 split with Glenn getting the lion's share. KK is on the left, and Glenn is on the right--except for Unleashed in the East and the live version of "Locked In" included in the re-masters. Glenn has always been the "technical guy" and KK was the wild man with the tremolo bar and feedback. Until sometime around "Turbo" KK got into sweep picking and Glenn seems to have followed him into that territory.

I'll say this for the guys in Priest: of all the guitarists from the 70s who are still actively recording NOBODY else has grown and evolved as much as they have without losing touch with their own their own beginings and heritage.

Now with that business out of the way. I think I need to check out Slayer a bit more deeply.

108. I'm well acquainted with the exploits of Messrs. Tipton and Downing.
I'm a long time Priest fan. I agree that Glen has ever been the better of the two and has taken the lion's share of the lead work but Kenny's playing has become more refined over the years and has always been important. They continue to put out quality material and their live performance is still quite strong. "Screaming" and "Defenders" are my favorite Priest albums.

I have made a Pelican channel on my Pandora radio, and it's super kick ass. For some reason. I really dig on instrumental metal.

Did you see the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Fest line-up? It's effin' awesome. I'd love to get tickets for Zodiak, but it's sponsored by Rockstar which is owned by the Michael Weiner Savage Family. I don't want him to get any of my money, :grr:

Too much good stuff and I like quite a few bands from different genres.

Maiden, Sabbath, Priest and Motorhead are good places to start. My current aural drugs of choice include High On Fire, Opeth, Devin Townsend/SYL, Mastodon and Down to name a few.

All that being said, what really gets me going is "The Trooper" by Maiden. Love. That. Song.

For more traditional "heavy metal" kind of stuff, I'd have to go with Judas Priest - "Victim of Changes": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXqb_3fR6Ok

Or maybe Iron Maiden - "Where Eagles Dare": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8p9JpDuQ-o

And on the other end of the spectrum (death/black metal), Incantation - "Demonic Incarnate": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ogu8AbvKsKU

I saw Fishbone at a festival in Vegas in 04 and he stage dived into the crowd while playing Party At Ground Zero. Off the hook.

64. I saw them in Hawaii during a big outdoors clusterfuck of a concert at some dude's ranch
I did not like Fishbone. Primus were much better, the Violent Femmes was a sound I was trying to escape, Tool was great.

Just depends on who Angelo feels like hiring to play with him that night. But if you don't care for Fishbone, it wouldn't matter anyhow.

77. You know what's sad?
Since ST is associated with gang violence, growing up in So Cal I never got to see them when they were on top. Granted, Sui's (gang members) are the types I probably wouldn't want to go to a concert with, anyhow.

107. I saw them 3 times on the tour supporting "Lights, Camera, Revolution"
A gal-pal of mine was a HUGE Queensryche fan, and ST was opening. At the show in Charlotte, we went to the meet-and-greet with them, and got all sorts of goodies(ep cassettes, autographed pictures, etc...), all of which i sent in a care package to a buddy who was locked-down in NYState.

Hellacious shows... great pits.

Can anyone think of a thrash metal band BEFORE Exodus? I can't. What a treat to see this classic band in a small club. I even got my copy of 'Bonded by Blood' autographed.

105. Iron Maiden - "Wasted Years"
The song that made me pick up a guitar, instead of just listening to other people play it. Also the first Maiden song I ever heard, which really changed my musical life apart from the learning guitar part - changed my favorite band from Van Halen to Iron Maiden, and introduced me to heavy metal in a big way.
