Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 11:21 AM by Tommy_Carcetti
....and the reason why you follow them.

Baseball

1. Baltimore Orioles--Born a Marylander. Started following the O's in their "Why Not?" season of 1989, and haven't stopped (even after 11 straight winning seasons). Still the team I root for over all others.
2. Florida Marlins--Living in South Florida, I've adopted the hometown team. Plus they need all the fans they can get. 2003 was an awesome experience, and going to playoff games at the stadium was something I'll never forget.
3. Tampa Bay Rays--I'm always a fan of all Florida pro teams, and the Rays gave me a lot to root for last year in their run to the World Series.

Football

1. Baltimore Ravens--As a Marylander, I knew I wanted to root for a Baltimore team even before the Ravens came to town, so when they started up in 1996, rooting for them was a no-brainer. Loved the 2000 season and what it meant for the city after having to endure 13 years without an NFL team (and no guaranteed return of the name and history either).
2. Jacksonville Jaguars--I was vacationing in the North Florida area when the Jaguars first started playing in 1995, so I've felt an affinity towards them because of that. Plus I actually like Jacksonville as a non-pretentious and somewhat overlooked city with some hidden secrets in it.
3. Miami Dolphins--The current hometown team. I don't have a close connection with them like I do with the Marlins, but I do wish them well and want them to win so long as they aren't playing my top two teams.

1. Okay
Baseball-
1) Well duh the Nats..I've been a self identified Washingtonian for 30+ years..I like rooting for the home town teams. And despite what some people think the DC burbs are a distinct group from the rest of the state sportswise.
2)Cincinnati Reds--Born there and my Dad moved back in 1980. I spent many summers visiting him and we went to many Reds games. I have still been to more Reds games than any other team.

Football
1)Redskins..same reason as for the Nats. I've grown up watching football because my mother was a coach for a local high school cheerleading squad. ANd my family are HUGH Skins fans. Also knew some season ticket holders and I got to go to a playoff game in 1983...I've been a huge fan since
2) Bengals..Same as with the Reds although I've never been to a Bengals game. But my dad has met several ex Bengals players and they seemed very nice
3) Browns..my dad LOVES the Browns with a passion even though he has lived in Cincinnati for 28 years (born in Cleveland). So I spent alot of time watching them when I visit or he visits..And also let me tell you I will NEVER EVER FORGIVE ART MODELL for breaking my father's heart by yanking away the Browns which is why the Ravens rank closely behind the Cowboys in my distaste for a team.
3) Browns..my

2. Angels
I refuse to call them the Los Angeles Angels.

I grew up going to Angels' games. They are my team. When they won the 2002 World Series -- that was one of the happiest, most thrilling moments of my life.

I also like the Orioles and the Padres.

3. NFL--Cowboys, Saints, Titans. College--Texas, LSU, Miss. State.
1. Cowboys--I started watching sports in my 20s, when I lived in Dallas, and the Cowboys were something of a religion. Since Austin doesn't have a team, I've never had a conflict.
2. Saints--grew up with the Saints. I didn't watch sports then, but they get in your blood, plus, being Southern and a liberal, I'm a sucker for lost causes.
3. Titans--Used to be Houston's team, so I followed them. As long as they had McNair (from Mississippi), I cheered for them. Just when they got rid of McNair, they picked up the QB from my college, so I'm still watching. Plus, Fisher is a class act.

College (yeah, it's not a league, so sue me):
1. Texas--Alma Mater, and I still live in Austin.
2. LSU--Never attended, but I was born in Baton Rouge (lived there for three days).
3. Mississippi State--first major college I attended.

In baseball I really only follow the Rangers, but sometimes I cheer for the Astros. I don't watch it much anymore. Same with basketball. Used to be the Mavericks and Rockets. Even though I live near San Antonio, I never warmed to the Spurs.

21. Not when their parents unwisely force them into engineering.
Then they go to MSU until they gain the courage to drop out and get married because they don't like engineering. Though in retrospect, engineering would have been better than getting trapped into bookkeeping. But I digress. :)

23. Bookkeeping, eh?
I know many many people who went to MSU for agriculture. I lived in the delta and many people I know are farmers.

My mom, aunt, and uncle are all MSU fans. My dad and brother are Ole Miss fans. But my brother, who can be an ass at times, lives in Oxford and got a State tag just to be funny. He is an Ole Miss fan, but they can be psycho at times!

25. At my high school, we all went into engineering.
Well, not all, but my circle of friends did. Harrison Central had a strong math program for the time, including calculus, so a lot of us had a legup for an engineering program.

I went back as a history major, to UT of Dallas, then went to UT in Austin for grad school. We had a kid, and I had to earn more money, and eventually couldn't keep up with grad studies. I was working part time as an accounting clerk when I got out--just because that's the path my part time jobs had taken me then--and just as I began searching, the bookkeeper/controller/office manager died, and I was offered the job, mostly because I was good with computers and the owner trusted me. I took it because it paid better than the entry level jobs I was looking at as a history major. My main goal, anyway, was to write novels, and I figured I could do that in my spare time. Eleven years later, and the novel didn't work out, I can't get a better job in accounting because that's the one type of degree I don't have, and the owners have gotten old and less ambitious and have shrunk the chain down to one store, so it no longer pays above average, but I get lots of free time and flexibility of schedule.

So I'm a bookkeeper until something breaks my lethargy. :) Which could happen today if I keep posting instead of working--being tossed out onto the street might get my ambition flowing again.

More than anyone wanted to know. Send me a bill for the therapy.

I do need some $$$, so expect a bill soon! :)

I have a good friend who went to MSU for engineering. He now is an engineer here in Jackson. He has no common sense, but is smart as a whip when it comes to the engineering stuff.

5. Okay.. here goes my sad story..
Im a 28 year old woman who never watched a day of sports in er life until i started dating my bf in 2000 and he told me "better get used to it, cause i love it..."

We had just moved to northern California and i so easily latched on to the Raiders immediately.

Had one or two good seasons and then 5 or 6 unspeakable ones, but i love them and will never leave them.

I am also a Saints fan because i am a native Louisianan.

College- LSU TIGERS! and UT Longhorns, of course
Baseball: bores me to sleep but I will watch an Astros game
Basketball: Pistons and then Rockets

But football is my bag. I am so much more of a fan than my bf ever expected... he created a monster ;0

8. Go Maryland!
Well, I lived in Silver Spring, so above all I am a Redskins fan, so here it goes.

Baseball:
1. Orioles - 2-0 baby! :)
2. Nats- 0-3 baby!
3. Whoever is playing the Yankees

College Football :
1. Maryland Terps : Fear the Turtle!
2. Florida State Seminoles: I moved to Fl when I was 8, and liked the Noles before they joined the ACC with Maryland. That presented a quandary. I will always root for MD over FSU, though.

NFL:
1. Redskins- No matter what level of suckiness the attain, I will always be a Redskins fan. I have a picture of me at 6 year old with Dave Butz and Mark Moseley. Good times.
2. Ravens- Perhaps because I live in FL now, I don't understand the animosity between Skins and Ravens fans, since they are in different conferences.
3. Bucs- I like to see them do well. Except when they are playing the Skins.
4. Whoever is playing the Cowboys

He let me wear his Super Bowl ring and signed my Redskins record cover. The record recapped his Super Bowl year. No wonder I still have feelings for the Skins.

My faves:

Football

1. Philadelphia Eagles (I live in the Philly area)
2. Washington Redskins (rooted for them before I became an Eagles fan)

Baseball

1. Philadephia Phillies (great comeback last night! Again, I root for them because I'm in the Philly area)
2. Baltimore Orioles (easy to follow them, as they are in the AL. Too bad they sometimes start ok only to fade.)

NHL

1. Philadelphia Flyers (same reasons)
2. Anaheim Ducks (I've liked them ever since hearing their funny name)

College basketball

1. Penn State (my parents graduated from there; also others in my family did)
2. the Big 5 Philly teams (no preference)

(in college football, Temple is so bad why bother having them as another team)

24. Regarding Ravens and Skins...
Edited on Fri Apr-10-09 10:40 AM by Tommy_Carcetti
...it's more of a personality clash between the two cities--Washington's image is of the Nation's Capital and high society power folk, where as Baltimore's image is more working class and folksy (neither of the images are totally accurate IMHO, but that's how they came off). Plus Baltimore fans have an animosity towards DC because they tried to keep the NFL from returning after the Colts left, and DC fans have an animosity towards Baltimore because they tried to keep MLB from returning after the Senators left. Now that each city has its respective teams, those old feelings simply play themselves out on the field.

Now...as far as I go......

Despite my DU persona, I actually don't hate either the Redskins or the Nationals. I'm somewhat apathetic towards them, but that's just because growing up Maryland I only had close ties to Baltimore, not DC, so thus I never really followed their teams. But I don't actually hate them. The only sports team I can say I actually hate begins with New York and ends with Yankees. DC's teams? I have about as much feelings regarding them as I do say, the St. Louis Rams or the Seattle Mariners. Which is totally neutral.

It's just that it's just too fun to tease TZ cause she's just so loveably teasible like that and we know she won't take it personally. (I mean, come on....someone made a picture of her as a turtle fapping a shoe, and she didn't even blink!) But shhhh....we can't let her know that! :)

The only thing I honestly hate about DC is its traffic grid. That I truly cannot stand, all joking aside.

13. OK...
NFL:

Cowboys: I've lived in the area temporarily for 21 years, so of course I'm a fan. Besides, like I tell my daughter: It's EASY to be a fan when you're team is winning all the time. The real fans are still fans when your team struggles under the burden of major suckage.

Broncos: I got interested in the NFL during my college years in Colorado. I was there during their unexpected run to the Super Bowl in the late 70s, and have always liked the franchise (and their fans) ever since.

Packers: What's not to like about a team owned by their city, and fans who will pack the stands in freezing weather even when their team struggles under the burden of major suckage?

College Football:

Air Force Falcons: My alma mater. What can I say? Although they've had some seasons in the past where they've struggled under the burden of major suckage, they're a great team and a great school.

Alabama: My son's attendance there (he graduates next month) is what caused me to "discover" SEC football. Great school, great venue, exciting games. Gotta love it. Roll Tide!

Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks: My daughter's school. Somebody has to anchor the bottom of the Southland Conference. Now their basketball program is another story...

Major League Baseball:

Texas Rangers: I live here. The venue is cool.

Baltimore Orioles: First major league city I lived in. Frequently travel to see away games in various cities.

19. OK, I'll go with three sports here
Baseball:

Milwaukee Brewers: I have no connection with Milwaukee, but I've been to Miller Park once. My Brewers fandom is 100% due to their radio voice, Bob Uecker -- who for my money is the best announcer in the game.

Florida Marlins: I lived in SoFla for 20 years, and followed the Marlins from inception through mediocrity through both World Series wins and both fire sales. I will say I was pissed when they dropped Roxy Bernstein from the radio broadcast, but their loss is Cal's gain.

Chicago Cubs: I love listening to Pat & Ron because Ron Santo is like the anti-broadcaster. It is literally like just listening to some guy you are sitting with at the ballpark.

Oakland A's: Once upon a time, I was born at the corner of MacArthur and Broadway... then the A's came from Kansas City ... and then we proceeded to win the World Series a lot...then we stunk, and then we got a little better under Billy Martin, and then Tony LaRussa came (and apparantly someone brought steroids), and we won a whole bunch more penants. Sorry Giants fans... Willie Mays was a long time ago.

Football:

Washington Redskins: Mrs. OBDs family has 5 season tickets. Why do I live in the Midwest again?

Oakland Raiders: I'd rather not talk about this right now, thank you.

College Football & Basketball:

Cal: I am a 3rd generation alumnus. I bleed blue and gold.

Maryland: Mrs. OBDs family has not made too much of the fact that the Terps kicked Cal's ass in football and hoops this year. I'd rather not talk about this right now, thank you.

Nebraska: I'll admit it - I used to hate the Huskers, but now that I'm here, I get it. It is such a unifying factor in people's lives here, and it is just one more logical reason to hate Texas and Oklahoma.

Creighton (Basketball): Dana Altman has a nice little program here, and it's fun to watch mid-major basketball.

26. Rousch Fenway
Rousch Fenway
Gregg Biffle fan, I like a driver who lets a loose car hang all out. (Guess that means one day I will have to like Rowdy :scared: )

Daugherty
Marcos Ambrose, I just like his personnality. And apparently he is very popular/well liked by everyone in the garage.

Hendrick
I like his reputation for for promoting from within. And of course I like to see middle aged drivers like Mark Martin do well.

And in the truck series

Team Redhorse
Johnny Benson perhaps as much because I don't care for Hornaday

Germain
Although she isn't running this year keeping tabs on Chrissy Wallace.
