3. Had them all my life, and my maternal grandfather before me.
Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 02:07 PM by Akoto
He and I were always very alike, right down to the migraines. My grandmother used to tell me of the ones that had him rolling on the floor, vomiting, etc. I was a bit stunned, seeing as that's exactly how I'd describe my incidents!

For some reason, I throw up at the peak of the headache less often than when I was younger. It may be that my pain threshold is higher, seeing as I've since acclimated to some pretty bad chronic pain elsewhere in my body.

Certain things are sure to set them off for me. Weather changes and cigarette smoke are the big ones.

4. I used to get them once a week for nearly a year.
Horrid, horrid pain. Blind in my right eye. Mercifully, I haven't had one in many years.

5. They just started last month
indications are that they are hormonal (ugh)

woke up at 2:30 this morning w/ one. It hurt so badly I didn't even want to turn on the lights to find my meds.

7. Do you mean . . .
. . . menopause?

If that brings on migraines, it might explain it for my sister. She just quit after 7 years of HRT. She's right now in the middle of the worst one she's had for 20 years.

8. yes
or, in my case, perimenopause.

Extreme dips or fluctuations in hormone levels can be a trigger for migraines.

6. I had them fairly regularly for about 2 years...
...when I was age 9-11.

The only thing my doctor could do was prescribe a strong narcotic that would just put me under until it was over.

Then, for no apparent reason, they just stopped.

9. I got them daily as a child. I hope not to pass that on to Bella.
They are hereditary for me. Now, I get one maybe 2 times a year. Awful! But the best part is when it goes away. That feeling is like some kinda high.

10. Just saw this article today, linking migraines to PTSD.
http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/idUSTRE53251R20090403

Of course, take it for what it is worth. I found nitrates in meat gave me migraines, probably one of the reasons it is easy for me to be vegetarian. And to anyone who suffers nausea, get some Tylenol suppositories, that is how you can medicate and not have to worry about puking it up.

11. I get ocular migraines fairly frequently
I rarely ever have pain, but I get this awful vision aura that makes it hard to see or concentrate on anything.

12. I get migraines - I refuse to call them headaches
Calling a migraine a headache is like calling a stroke a dizzy spell.

Mine are triggered by changes in barometric pressure or by disruptions in my sleep cycle. So if I'm up all night for some reason, or if I get too much sleep, I get one. I also get them when the weather changes (I'm borderline today).

When I lived in Vermont, I got 2 or 3 a week in the summer. :nuke:

Now I get them about 6 or 7 times a year. Big improvement.

13. I never have migraines and very seldom have headaches.
However, after almost every meal I get quite sick to my stomach for about a half hour. We all have our cross to bear.

15. I don't think so. I've had some pretty fierce headaches, but
nothing compared to what my sister and husband experience... they both know the symptoms and can usually stop a migraine before it gets too bad, but sometimes circumstances prevent that and they are in awful pain.

Do you get them, bertha?

16. No poll option for my frequency - 10-12 per month
Actually, since they last 36 hours and then recur, it's like having one that never ends. I take anti-seizure meds for them and just had my dosage increased again, The fun part is literally going blind in one eye.

17. used to have them monthly, yeah THAT monthly. After a hysterectomy, the
migraines vanished.

Now about the closest I come to one is if I sit or sleep with my head/neck in a position that spasms my neck muscles.

18. Yep. For thirty years now.
The only thing that works for me is an injection of Imitrex. Then I get to be flaky for a day or two after that, but it sure beats twenty-four hours of pain and nausea. I have quite a collection of fascinating theories that other "helpful" people have come up with as to why I get migraines, everything from "you think too much" to "you're just trying to get a day off".

19. Crawled in bed at 8:00 with one last night. First one I've had in quite awhile.
In 1994 I had a migraine from Memorial Day through July 4. I'm not kidding. MRI, CTScans, you name it. No one ever did figure out what broke the cycle. After that I had them about once a month. I started taking Feverfew and it helped as a prophylactic. But the best cure was childbirth which I understand is not an option for everyone. I have had fewer and fewer migraines with each kid. Now it is at about once a year and I can live with that.

Last night's was strange. I was relaxing in a bubble bath of all things when it hit.

20. Yes, they were frequent and debilitating
until the doctor put me on beta blockers. I also have MVP and he believes it is related.
Honestly, I've probably had all of two since going on the meds and that was due to stress related to my mother's illness and death.

22. I'm on a low dose anti-hypertensive which prevents the blood vessels from spasming
and that raised my threshold considerably.

23. Migraines are the reason I'm not supposed to take birth control pills.
The doctor said the vision-disturbance-migraines meant I was at risk of getting a stroke, and that I should find a different form of contraception. Sure enough, the vision-disturbance-migraines stopped almost completely when I stopped taking BC pills.
