What do you give as a Bat Mizvah gift? Anyone?
My niece's bat Mitzvah is next month, and I have no idea what I am supposed to do in terms of a gift. I'm an Irish Catholic, so this is all very new to me.

What do you you get a very bright 13 year old girl marking this occasion?

3. Either money in a sum divisible by $18 ($36 usually) for good luck
Or a gift certificate to Barnes and Noble.

6. We like to give gifts based on "Chai" which is the hebrew word
for life. Chai is two letters, Chet and Yud, and they add up to (Think like A is 1, B is 2, C is 3, etc. in English) to 18. So gift denominations are traditionally given in increments of 18. If it is your niece, you should think of giving more then just $18 or $36 though, maybe $54 or $72 depending on how close you are to her. Hope this helps...

11. Old saying used to be (actually before my Bar Mitzvah even)
"Today I am a fountain pen", as that was THE gift.

For those of you who don't know, the Bar Mitzvah is when a boy becomes a man in the Jewish tradition, thus the saying, "Today I am a man".

Bat Mitzvah (for girls) is "relatively" new.

12. The one and only Bat Mitzvah we were invited to
we gave the young lady in question a freshwater pearl bracelet. I liked the idea of something pretty she could wear to remember the big day. To say she was excited was an understatement.

Obviously, everyone else disagrees, but since she's your niece, it might be a nice time to give her a piece of jewelry, such as a bracelet like the above, earrings, etcetera. IMHO.

13. If you're not comfortable with the idea of cash,
you can always give something like a Borders Gift Card.

But, honestly, money is the best gift.

And have fun. The parties after a bar or bat mitzvah are wonderful celebrations, so enjoy!!!
