Williams was in top form with his manic energy and stream-of-consciousness lunacy. Midler, in contrast, found the emotional vein of the farewell. After the topic of their conversation turned to Johnny's favorite songs ("I'll Be Seeing You" and "Here's That Rainy Day"), Midler mentioned she knew a chorus of the latter. 24. I watched that in live time myself. I saw the tears break.

Johnny Carson was a hero to me. I was heartbroken when he died. And I also could see his pain when his son died in a tragic accident. He carried on, but I don't think he was the same after that. Little did I know ...

And what can I say about the Divine Ms M? I don't see her as an idol in the gay or sexual sense. She's just fucking awesome. And has a voice that could melt your socks off and soothe the most ill of moods. Or break you into tears.

I really wish I could find that last episode with Johnny Carson. It was priceless.

I taped it on a cassette, but who has a machine that can play one now?
