2. elastic straps worn around the leg with hooks to hold up socks

I miss celluloid collars too. When men start wearing both of those again, I'll consider hosiery. Not wear necessarily, just consider. If you watch Turner Classic Movies you may see them in films set in the 19th century.

5. I had a friend who was military who got me into wearing them
back when I wore a suit often.

The ones he made (yeah, he made his own; even got me involved in trying to market them) went from the shirt down to the sock. They work great, give you a confident feeling that you don't have to keep tucking your shirt back in after moving around.

7. The thing is the clips would hurt when you sit, no?
Edited on Tue Apr-14-09 10:42 AM by DeepBlueC
What they used to have on men's pants and some women's slacks (expensive ones) were at least a couple of thin nubby rubber rectangles sewn onto the waistband facing inside. They were there precisely to keep shirts tucked in neatly. Lots of the really smart features of tailoring have disappeared when some genius asked "what do we need THESE for?" and saved a few cents with the answer.

10. No, I never had a problem with that
the garter made a "Y" to the front and back shirt-tails (although a single clip at the very center of the front and back shirt-tail would work almost as well), but the "Y" was fairly narrow and was really just along the side of your leg when sitting.

8. Ugh, those were the worst things ever
Granted, they were always pulling your shirt down tight and you looked good on the outside, but boy did they play hell with the hair on your legs.

I'll never wear those things again. Getting back into that level of fitness where I didn't need them anyway would be far less painful.

11. I never really had much problem with that

except occasionally when putting them on; I'd get a hair caught in a bad spot.

I should dig out the old marketing photos I did for that guy. This was 15 years+ ago, it would be funny to see how I tried to sex the product up, and see something actually shot on film. "The bag, the sag, the Cure" was my illustrative tagline for the garters, lol.

Even now I dig a pair of garters out to use whenever I have to wear a suit; I'm not fat, but I still have a problem with my shirt working it's way out of my pants if I don't wear them.

12. We don't need garters anymore
Garters were common place when silk socks were frequently worn, as the silk stretched out and did not form fit to the leg. Now that elasticized socks are common, the need for garters is outdated.

15. And sleeve garters went out when measured sleeve-lengths for manufactured shirts became common.

18. I could use them for my socks.
Nobody on this planet makes dress socks that will stay up on me without going with something knee-high.

21. Modern technology, William!
Men's hosiery has come a long way from
those saggy wool tubes our grandpas
used to have to deal with.

My socks stay up all day, all by themselves.

High-tech STUFF!

It's a damn shame, too, because my awesome pair of heels is totally wasted without one.
