Did Mel Gibson ever explain why he cheated on his wife?
I mean, normally I don't care but given his religious stance, it's at least worth a bucket of popcorn...

9. His wife and he have been separated for some time
I'm not sure if they got a legal separation, but I suspect they did since children were involved.

Although I have no inside knowledge to their relationship, I suspect the affair probably came as no surprise to his wife and probably had nothing to do with her filing for divorce. I would be more inclined to believe that she has met someone else and wants to get married, or perhaps she just thinks things have gone on long enough and she needs to move on.

16. True, but let's mention that they have been separated for 3 1/2 years.

Since they have a child who will be 10 this week, it's reasonable to think that they didn't want to end the marriage when the boy was younger.

17. A decision I am currently living under, myself.
About the same time frame, too. Though I haven't been vacationing on beaches with anyone, and my spouse won't get $400 million when we divorce. :)

20. I think it's always good to look out for the kids.

Sorry you're going through this now. No fun.

Since I learned about the 3 1/2 year separation, I wonder if his wife even cares about the photos of Mel on the beach with another woman. Maybe it was the last straw, maybe she was already planning to file this month. Whatever, I'm not wasting time worrying about it, are you?

22. I'm always interested in the way people misrepresent news stories
or the way they fit news stories into a set of preconceptions that probably reflect their own experiences more than those of the people in the news stories. So I'm paying a minor amount of attention to people's reactions to it. Once tried to write a novel on that very subject, actually.

Aside from that, and the occassional humourous jab at the fellow, I wish their family the best of luck.

As for me, thanks for the condolences. It was only about the kids for longer than the 3 1/2 years of separation. They (10 and 15) are the center of every decision I make, and so far every one my spouse seems to make, so it really isn't all that bad. After that amount of time, things like possessions and bills have a way of naturally aligning, so the final divorce will just be a formality.

23. That doesn't make him any less of a hypocrite
Don't forget that Gibson has used his fame to promote himself as a "traditionalist Catholic" and has frequently criticized others from that viewpoint. So regardless of his wife's motives for filing, he still wasn't 'practicing what he preaches'.

24. Could you give me a quote where Mel Gibson
said he was not a sinner, was not flawed, did not have problems he is still working on?

There is a presumption that Christians think they are perfect, most know they are sinners just like other people. We believe we have our Lord and Saviour Jesus to help with issues, but we are still sinners.

If a preacher or person recommends people do a good thing, then does not live up to it, it does not change the fact that doing a good thing is a better choice. Only if he claimed to not be a sinner also would there be hypocrisy. Most Christians say, we should try to.... including themselves in trying to be a certain way.

I understand many people of faith tell others how they should act, and sometimes even with anger, and in that by most definitions they would not be acting in love, and sinning by most definitions. So I know why people see many Christians that way. But next time you make a mistake, couldn't someone level a charge against you, the same charge you leveled against Mel Gibson?

If you ever said people probably should not lie or gossip, then someday you lied or gossiped, wouldn't you be the same as Mel Gibson?

There is a verse that addresses this, work on the plank in ones own eye, before commenting on the splinter in your neighbors. So it has been addressed in the cannon.

25. It has nothing to do with whether he's a "sinner" or not
Only if he claimed to not be a sinner also would there be hypocrisy

I can't agree that just because he never claimed not to be a "sinner" that he is always and forever free of being a hypocrite.

If you ever said people probably should not lie or gossip, then someday you lied or gossiped, wouldn't you be the same as Mel Gibson?

I would never say such a ridiculous thing in the first place, so it's rather a mute point. However, if I had ever said such a ridiculous thing while at the same time doing exactly that, then yes, I would be very much like Mel Gibson. So there you go.

26. I think it comes down to
does he think he is better or special, if he does then hypocrisy fits that thought. Many people comment on issues they have, or might again experience, to give insight, without saying they are perfect or won't have the same issues.

We may disagree on it, but I think there is a distinction based on if its judging others or not.

27. I see it a bit differently
Remember that he's not just espousing those values, he is making a great deal of money espousing those values while privately living a double standard. In that way he's very much like Jimmy Swaggart, Rush Limbaugh, Jim Bakker, etc. although perhaps not to the same degree.

I'm not saying he is or isn't a bad person because of it. Personally I could care less if he's separated from his wife and banging a woman young enough to be his daughter. It is also worth noting that he does at least outwardly appear to be genuinely remorseful about his bad behavior and he certainly has done some genuinely good things, but that doesn't mean he should get a free pass simply because everyone is a "sinner".

28. That makes sense.
I think I mentioned it because of the pile on. There are lots of double standards in the world, your comment reminds me that I should spend some time and think on ones I have. It does seem to be a issue most have.

My lack of immediate thoughts on my own double standards, makes me think I have not thought on that enough.
