1. sounds delicious
I still have a butt end ham in the fridge that I was too sick to cook for Easter. Guess I'll make it this weekend. But already I'm thinking past it to all the delicious leftovers. Lots you can do with ham.

some pinto beans with a few Navy beans and some barley together to fill the pot. How long did yours cook? I looked for online recipes, and I'm seeing 8-12 hours...

How did it turn out?

4. I made a big pot of lima beans yesterday.
Cooked the beans with the ham bone.

The lima beans were great.

What are Great Northern Beans.

5. Great northern beans = any white beans.
My dad used to call them navy beans.

6. Great northern beans are simply a variety of navy beans
Lima beans are a different species so there are distinct differences. Both go well with smoked ham hocks though.

Only lima or pinto beans.

8. Both are strongly favored in the south
Personally I haven't found a legume I didn't like. Even chickpeas are quite nice when made into humus. While butter beans and pintos are high on my list, I like a bit of variety since we have them so often.

10. I love beans.
They are easy to cook and can feed a lot of folks.

Slow cooking is the key.

Cornbread helps also.

9. No red beans?
You're on the edge of red bean country.

11. Definitely red beans
And not those sissy kidney beans some folks call red beans either.

They are a bit hard to find locally though. I know of only one supermarket chain that carries them.

13. My dad's bean soup was great,
he'd put that big old ham bone in there,

navy beans, a little carrots, onions, and celery

He'd cook it til the ham fell off the bone. That's when he knew it was done. Didn't matter if the beans were still hard or not.
