12. No No No
They were pretty lame on SNL last week. They reminded me of a warmed-over Siouxsie and the Banshees, but without the charisma or fashion sense of Siouxsie and without the intriguing musicianship of Budgie, Severin and the dearly departed John McGeoch (the best guitarist the Banshees had-- sorry Robert Smith).

13. O O O
Sound and presence on Letterman was good, esp. strong for a trio.

I like that she's doing what yes reminds us of past rock goddesses but still has her own disctinct style and who else is doin it?

15. Well, Siouxsie is still doing it, for one...
Recreating the past is easy, especially when somebody else has already paved the way for you. Interpol, I'm looking in your direction, too.....

Doing something unique is another story all together. I like to listen to something and not have any idea what else it sounds like when I first hear it. If I can listen for a minute and point out that it sounds a lot like something else I've heard, chances are it won't hold my interest.

And they're not a "real" trio either. They've got other musicians playing with them-- not to mention the sequencers, etc.

Don't get me wrong, they're okay. However, they don't blow me away, like the first time I heard Stereolab, or My Bloody Valentine, or Neko Case.

"I like to listen to something and not have any idea what else it sounds like when I first hear it. If I can listen for a minute and point out that it sounds a lot like something else I've heard, chances are it won't hold my interest."

Esp. if we grew up in more musically diverse and original times, copycat stuff is beyond boring.

Her thing seems to be coming from somewhere deep, tho. She's not a poseur. I hear more a Chrissie/Patti/Lenya Lovich thing in her yelp, but it's still hers. You're right, if she reminded me too much of a copycat of Siouxsie or the others, I'd tune out.

How many women rockers are there these days? Maybe part of it is just glad someone picked up the ball that got dropped a few decades ago......

yes and Sioux still rocks.

22. I'm still going to give it another listen though
One impression is difficult to form an opinion of it. A friend of mine recommended a few things I'd probably like so I'll give it a listen.

As long as it's not the Dead though. That stuff sucks. :P

23. YYY's guitarist is incredibly lame even when one doesn't compare...
him to the great John McGeoch
Karen O and the drummer are servicable, but that lameass guitarplayer doesn't even rise to the level of servicable

27. McGeoch was so beyond guitar players
He even made the talented Keith Levine look like Mick Mars by comparison.

I seriously miss McGeoch. He was a phenomenal talent. Given the current crop of guitarists coming up these days, it makes me even more sad that he's gone.

Edited on Wed Apr-15-09 04:01 PM by mvd
They are not a fave of mine, but they've gotten more to my liking on each new CD. Songs like "Little Shadow" expand their horizons and are more folky than even some singer/songwriter ballads. :hi:

I prefer bands with male lead singers. I'm a woman, and I don't know why I have this preference, but I do. On the other hand, I've liked the Pretenders for years.

Blech! Couldn't even sit through the whole song on SNL. So instead of watching them on Letterman, I opted for Airborne Toxic Event on Leno. I like that song, "Sometime Around Midnight."
