Say Hello to Stamos and Gershon in ‘Birdie’

Over the years the key roles in “Bye Bye Birdie” have been played by their share of sexpots (Chita Rivera, Ann-Margret) and squares (Dick Van Dyke). Guess which route Roundabout Theater Company is taking for its revival of the musical? In a news release Roundabout said that it had cast John Stamos, above (of Broadway’s “Nine” and “Cabaret” and, of course, “Full House”), and Gina Gershon, below, (“Showgirls” and “Boeing-Boeing”) to play the roles of Albert Peterson, the publicity-seeking songwriter, and Rose Alvarez, his doting assistant. The new production, which is to be directed and choreographed by Robert Longbottom, has also cast Bill Irwin (soon to be seen in “Waiting for Godot”), as Mr. MacAfee, and Jayne Houdyshell, (“Wicked”) as Mae Peterson. The revival of “Bye Bye Birdie,” the first to play Broadway since its 1961 premiere there, is scheduled for the fall.
