any plumbers in the house? (toilet problem)
My toilet makes a pretty quiet, but very annoying, sound. If I lift the cover off the tank and touch that bulb thing, it stops. I'm certain that I need to loosen or tighten something. But I'm not sure which or what.

1. Is it like a shooshing sound?
Sounds like where water refills the tank after a flush, and it didn't get completely shut off after the tank was full. In that case it would just keep running and water would be going out the overflow pipe.

2. Sounds like what mine was doing
Edited on Sat Apr-18-09 06:58 AM by lizerdbits
I tightened the screw where the bulb attaches to the tall thing where the water comes in and it stopped. I think water was continuing to drip out after it filled, is it a drippy kind of sound?

4.  The bulb thing you push down -
if it is on a metal rod with threads on the end, unscrew it one or two turns to make it slightly longer, or just bend the rod slightly to lower the float (bulb thing). The float controls a valve that shuts off the water flowing in to fill the tank after the toilet is flushed. The valve is not shutting off completely and water is running continuously, making that sound and costing you a ton of money on your water bill. Bending the rod slightly forces the float into contact with the water - this will close the valvewhen the water rises. Experiment till the sound stops. It is much easier than it sounds - you will see how it works if you look at it carefully.
This happens from time to time - you may eventually need to rebuild the inside of the tank, not hard at all-kits are available from many Home Deopt, etc.
Very easy fix - for god's sake, don't fuck it up!!!!(joke)
