Kindly send healing vibes to Amelia the cat, the actual bossy monkey
Edited on Sat Apr-18-09 08:18 AM by Bossy Monkey
She had a nosebleed yesterday. I appreciate that this sounds like, "Lounge, send healing vibes for my hangnail," but apparently nosebleeds are rare in cats and can be serious. The vet's office opens momentarily and I'll be calling, and hopefully they can fit me in today. And hopefully she just bumped her head or something. She was sneezing blood all evening, but seems OK now, knock on wood.

Edit: They turn out not to be open on Saturday. I will call the emergency vet for advice, but suspect that she'll be all right until she can be checked on Monday. Cross all fingers and toes!

4. Amelia says thanks and licks you on the nose, but only after asking permission first
as she is a very polite kitty (when she isn't being bossy).

3. Dang website had incorrect (or out of date) hours; they're not in fact open on Saturday.
I'm pretty sure whatever it is will wait until Monday, but I'll probably call the emergency vets for advice just to be sure. She seems perfectly normal; I'm hoping that the neighbors' outside cats were just doing something extra funky in the yard and she banged her nose on the window. Granted, she's never done anything like that before, but I'm hoping. back.

5. Don't wait
Do call the emergency vets.

My 4-year-old kitty died 3 weeks ago, one day after we first noticed symptoms which turned out to be a urinary blockage. We waited till the next morning to bring him in, but it turned out to be too late. I keep wondering if he could have been saved had we brought him to emergency the night before.

Hope all will be well with the bossy monkey.

6. I'm so sorry. Hugs and bottomless sympathy (and empathy)
When I was with my girlfriend last year, we had to put her beloved cat of 8 years to sleep due to liver and kidney failure. I think people often fail to understand the impact of the loss of a beloved pet. It was traumatic to us and also seems to have been the beginning of the end of our relationship. (Not that either of us blamed the other, we just... unwound.) Enough about me, just wanted to say I know what you're feeling, I've felt it, too, and I'm sorry.

8. Aww. Vibes to that gorgeous kitty (your avatar, right?)
My sister's kitty got bloody noses ... There was some growth in her nasal passageway. She was 20 though, so there wasn't much for them to do. She died of other causes.

10. I'm hoping it isn't a growth, but that is my fear. I'll find out when I see the vet.

She's only 5 or so, and otherwise seems healthy. Crossing my fingers still.

Edit: and yes, she's the cat in my avatar picture.

11. Amelia says-- what DOES she say? She doesn't do a lot of meowing
but being the bossy monkey, she certainly does a lot of vocalizing. I claim she's a Norwegian forest cat, who are supposed to communicate by birdlike trilling. I don't know about birdlike, but there is a degree of trilling in there. Regardless, Amelia answers your meows back, adorably, especially any time the scritches stop for more than five seconds.:)

12. Digits crossed, vibes heading your way
Everything wrong with a pet is a big deal because they can't tell us how bad it is or reassure us that it's nothing. I hope this is nothing but you are wise to take it very seriously. Lounge has plenty of vibes to spare.

13. Oh, she reassures me it's nothing! (She hates the cat carrier, and the car
and shows no signs of becoming a fan of vets' offices.) But we're going anyway.

Thanks! back

17. UPDATE: Vet says it's probably just herpes
Anyway, she saw no sign of anything life-threatening. She gave Amelia an antibiotic shot and gave me an ointment for her left eye (same side as the nosebleed best as I can remember) which is a bit over-winky. Since the nosebleed resolved itself the same evening, that ends the matter unless it comes back again. I am much relieved and Amelia will probably someday forgive me for putting her in the cat carrier twice more (and for the eye ointment, which I haven't tried to apply yet).

Anal-retentive me says wait, isn't herpes a virus? What good would antibiotics do? But I guess even professionals can speak a little loosely from time to time.

Now to go google "Can I get herpes from my cat?" :scared: J/k.

18. possible explanation
if a lesion burst you can get secondary infection, especially in mucus membranes. The nasal passages tend to be a place where bacteria lurks so if the skin is broken you want to keep infection controlled. Glad there's nothing major to worry about. :)

19. I looked it up; yeah, I'm all for protecting against secondary infection
Amelia, on the other hand, continues to say, "I'm fine, fine! What were you thinking?" At the vet's, she was hiding her face under the kitty bed, presumably on the theory that If I can't see them, they can't see me. She's a genius!:P

As for hiding the face thing.....My girls have it down to an art..find a small area (like the sink) and curl up as tight as they can..I guess they think they are armadillos...;)

23. You know the vet still found her anyway? They must give them special training
(thought Amelia). The examination room had no good crannies to hide in nor furniture to hide under. So she just huddled in the corner. Poor girl, but it ended well.:)

"Put what in my what!?" I will persist, however.

25. I dunno. Does running away from the Big Stinky Man Thing every time he approaches
with eye ointment constitute feeling better?:) I think she's fine, am open to suggestions on how a single person can get eye ointment into a recalcitrant kitty's eyes. (Online directions are great: "...and with your fourth set of hands, ...")

Amelia says thanks to you and asks Max for tips on avoiding Big Stinky Man Thing and his eye ointment. (She's lying on my lap as I type this, so it's pretty obviously the eye ointment that she objects to.:))

and just grabbing tight. Still unclear where I'm finding the second, third, and fourth set of hands, though.:)
